Piyush Goyal proposed multiple solutions to address the concerns of protesting farmers in the fourth round of talks held in Chandigarh on Sunday. The minister representing government proposed a five-year deal with the farmers to buy pulses and cotton at minimum support price (MSP). «We have together proposed a very innovative, out-of-the-box idea...The govt promoted cooperative societies like NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India) will form a contract and buy products from the farmers on MSP. There will be no limit on the quantity,» he said, post the meeting with the farmer leaders.

India has allowed exports of onions on government-to-government basis to some countries, on recommendation of the Ministry of External Affairs, said people aware of the matter. One of the persons said a limited quantity of onion exports has been allowed for bilateral purposes though no decision has been taken on lifting a complete ban on onion exports. Details of the exporting agency could not be ascertained. Another person said the government has permitted exports of onions in limited quantities to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bahrain, Bhutan and Nepal, among others.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday asserted that ministers would have no choice but to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls if that was the overwhelming opinion of local MLAs and party leaders, setting off worries in sections of ministers who are loath to the idea. The CM, responding to queries at Malavalli in Mandya district over social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa’s public refusal to contest the LS polls, said the party would go by the recommendation of the local MLAs, party candidates who lost the assembly polls, as well as block, and district presidents. Be it Mahadevappa or any other minister, the party would give the ticket to whoever the local leaders wanted, the CM said, suggesting that the ministers would have to take the plunge if the situation demanded that. The social welfare minister had, on Saturday, told the media that he did not want to contest the polls when he was told his name was among the potential candidates the party’s survey had revealed. A displeased Mahadevappa said the survey should probably also include the names of the CM and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar as they were also competent and popular leaders to contest the LS election.

Japan has unveiled plans to issue six-month visas catering to digital nomads with an annual income of ¥10 million ($68,300) or more. The initiative is slated to commence by the end of March. According to a Japan Times report, digital nomads, individuals who work remotely while moving between locations for short or medium-term stays, from 49 countries and territories, will be eligible for the «specified activities» visa category. This extends to self-employed applicants as well. Countries and territories eligible for this program have existing tax treaties and agreements that eliminate the need for short-term visas with Japan, including the U.S., Australia, and Singapore.
