Hardeep Singh Nijjar Killing: Keep embassy staff equal, Canada told
India has asked Canada to reduce its number of diplomats across its missions in the country and repatriate 41 diplomats by early next week, saying it would revoke their diplomatic immunity if they stayed after the given date. This comes just weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of a «potential» involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. While the Indian government is yet to issue a statement on its latest move, sources have indicated to ET that the decision to ask Canada to reduce its diplomats by October 10 is aimed at bringing the strength of Indian missions and Canadian missions on par. Indian missions in Canada have around 21 diplomats and the Canadian missions in India currently have 62 diplomats. Meanwhile, Trudeau went on the backfoot on Tuesday and said that his government was «not looking to escalate the situation» with India.

First phase of New Noida to start from next year; The new industrial city to be developed in 5 phases
Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad Investment Region (DNGIR), often referred to as Noida 2.0, has outlined a unique «no relocation policy» for the current population residing within the area. As per a TOI report, this approach stands in contrast to conventional projects, as it aims to absorb the existing rural communities into the evolving industries and various sectors that will emerge within the region by the year 2041. DNGIR, conceived as an extension of the National Capital Region (NCR) city, Noida, is a strategic response to the diminishing availability of space for accommodating industries.

"In close coordination with Canada...": US on Nijjar's killing
Hardeep Singh Nijjar. «We remain in close coordination with our Canadian colleagues on this question,» US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said while responding to a question related to Nijjar's killing in Canada. Miller's remarks came during a daily press briefing on Monday (US local time). Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently alleged that the Indian government was behind the fatal shooting of Nijjar. Nijjar, who was a designated terrorist in India, was gunned down outside a Gurdwara, in a parking area in Canada's Surrey, British Columbia on June 18. Trudeau, during a debate in the Canadian Parliament, claimed his country's national security officials had reasons to believe that «agents of the Indian government» carried out the killing of the Canadian citizen, who also served as the president of Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. However, India has outrightly rejected the claims, calling it 'absurd' and 'motivated'. Notably, Canada has yet to provide any public evidence to support the claim about the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Miller said the US has engaged with the Indian government on a number of occasions to urge them to cooperate with Canada's investigation. He said US State Secretary Antony Blinken had an opportunity to discuss the issue with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar during their meeting on Friday. Meanwhile, Trudeau has said that Ottawa wants to «work constructively with India» regarding the allegations. While addressing a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trudeau said, «In regards to India, Canada has shared the credible allegations that I talked about on Monday. With India, we did that many weeks ago.

US Fed official says high interest rates likely for 'some time'
US Federal Reserve will likely need to keep interest rates higher for longer in order to firmly bring down inflation, a senior Fed official said Monday. The Fed has raised its key lending rate 11 times since March 2022, lifting rates to a 22-year high as it looks to bring inflation down to its long-term target of two percent. Higher rates lower inflation by raising the cost of borrowing, which can cause financial pain for consumers with mortgages and outstanding loans. Despite falling sharply over the last 12 months, inflation remains stubbornly above target, leading most Fed officials to predict last month that another hike is needed this year. «The most important question at this point is not whether an additional rate increase is needed this year or not, but rather how long we will need to hold rates at a sufficiently restrictive level to achieve our goals,» Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr told a conference in New York in prepared remarks. «I expect it will take some time,» he continued, adding that his decision would be guided by «a range of incoming data.» Barr's comments echo the views of the majority of his colleagues, who recently lowered the number of rate cuts they expect in 2024, suggesting a longer period of high rates. In his remarks, Barr said recent data pointed to moderating inflation, but «resilience» in economic data. «I now see a higher probability than I did previously of the US economy achieving a return to price stability without the degree of job losses that have typically accompanied significant monetary policy tightening cycles,» he said. He added that «the historical record cautions that this outcome could be quite difficult to achieve.»
