Odisha govt suffered loss of Rs 75 crore excise revenue during COVID pandemic: CAG
Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) unearthed a loss of excise revenue amounting to Rs 75.07 crore due to manipulation of manually maintained sales registers by retail shops of alcoholic beverages in Odisha during the COVID-19 pandemic. In its report, which was placed in the assembly on Saturday, the CAG said that the Odisha Excise Department in May 2020 imposed the Special COVID Fee (SCF), at the rate of 50 per cent of the maximum retail price, on all foreign made foreign liquor, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), beer, wine and ready to drink beverages, sold in the state. SCF was imposed in view of the expected loss of excise revenue, on account of the two months' shutdown, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Budget 2025: CII urges govt to stick to fiscal deficit target
fiscal deficit target of 4.9 per cent of GDP for 2024-25 and 4.5 per cent for 2025-26, cautioning that «overly aggressive targets» beyond these could adversely affect India's economic growth. «India has been growing rapidly amidst a slowing global economy. Prudent fiscal management for macroeconomic stability has been pivotal to this growth,» said Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, elaborating on suggestions for the forthcoming Union Budget. CII also highlighted the announcement in the Union Budget 2024-25 to keep the fiscal deficit at levels that help reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio. In preparation for this, the forthcoming budget could lay out a glide path to bring the central government's debt to below 50 per cent of GDP in the medium term (by 2030-31), and below 40 per cent of GDP in the long term, CII has suggested.

Cold war brewing is brewing between Prince William and Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry is right in the middle of it!
Kate Middleton is at loggerheads with her husband, Prince William. The Princes of Wales are reportedly desirous of mending the rift between the Royal Family and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. RadarOnline.com reports that royal correspondent Katie Nicholl believes Princess Kate has the potential to serve as a «role model» and peacemaker for the strained relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry. During an interview with royal journalist Bronte Coy, Nicholl discussed Kate’s “vulnerable” nature and her capacity to help “heal” the royal family. «Kate has faced hurtful accusations from Harry, including mentions of her children, which has deeply upset her,» Nicholl explained. «Prince William, meanwhile, remains extremely angry and betrayed by his brother’s actions.» Despite William’s frustrations, Nicholl suggests that Princess Kate might be open to reconciliation in the future.

Adani's solar contract has tariff lower than competition, can find new buyer: Analysts
solar power contract, which is at the centre of bribery allegations, has tariffs that are lower than competition and can find new buyers in case the pact is cancelled, according to analysts. US authorities have charged Adani Group Founder-Chairman Gautam Adani and others for being part of a scheme to offer USD 265 million bribe to Indian officials to gain a contract to supply 8 gigawatt of electricity generated from solar energy by Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL). The group has denied all charges. «If Adani promoters are found guilty, we believe the size of potential penalty is manageable given it is up to three times the value of the bribe,» Nomura said in a report. The brokerage said there are about 1.8 GW solar projects commissioned in Gujarat from February-March 2024, with tariff of Rs 2.42 per unit under the 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Taiwan reports 14 Chinese warships, 4 balloons near island
balloons near Taiwan between Saturday and Sunday, according to Taiwan's Defence Ministry, as Beijing ramps up pressure on the island it claims as its own. China's military activities come amid speculation Beijing might organise military drills around the island in response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's recent visit to Pacific allies, including US stops in Hawaii and Guam. China claims Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy of 23 million people, as its own territory, and bristles at other countries' formal exchanges with Taiwan. The United States, like most countries, doesn't recognize Taiwan as a country but is its main unofficial backer and sells it arms.
