Beware of political deepfakes: Don't let them take over our minds
Realistic AI-generated images and voice recordings may be the latest threat to democracy, but they’re part of a long-standing family of deceptions. The way to fight so-called deepfakes isn’t to develop some rumour-busting form of AI or train the public to spot fake images. A better tactic would be to encourage a few well-known critical thinking methods—refocusing our attention, reconsidering our sources and questioning ourselves.

Mankind counters objections raised by chemists body on supplement ad
Mankind Pharma, the country's fourth largest pharma company, has countered the objections raised by a retail chemists' body which had sought withdrawal of advertisement of its vitamin supplement, HealthOK. According to the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), the advertisement that features actor Ranveer Singh insinuates that non-vegetarian individuals are healthier. In a letter dated February 13 to the association, the company said its intent was not to hurt anyone or undervalue the benefits of vegetarian food. Mankind shared epidemiological studies done by independent doctors and researchers indicating deficiency of essential vitamins in the Indian population. It urged the AIOCD to allow continuation of the advertisement in the greater interest and benefit of Indian citizens.

The fall of red wine's health halo: Unraveling the truth behind the myth
«The answer to the riddle, the explanation of the paradox, may lie in this inviting glass,» Safer said, raising a glass of red wine to viewers. Doctors believed that wine had «a flushing effect» that prevented blood clot-forming cells from clinging to artery walls, Safer said. This, according to a French researcher who was featured in the segment, could reduce the risk of a blockage and, therefore, the risk of a heart attack.

Climate change threatens children's health: Study links extreme temperatures to preterm births
extreme temperatures driven by climate change will increase risk of preterm birth by 60 per cent, causing several lifelong complications for millions of children around the world, a new research has found. Analysing results from 163 health studies globally, researchers said they have determined that climate change will be directly responsible for multiple detrimental health impacts in children, including higher occurrences of respiratory illnesses and more hospitalisations. The researchers, led by those at The University of Western Australia, warned that lack of global action on climate change will likely devastate children's health for generations. They said their study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, was the first to collect all the available scientific evidence for the effects of climate change on children's health.

Idli and chicken jalfrezi top list of dishes with highest biodiversity impact: Study
idli, chana masala and rajma featured in the top 20 dishes with the highest biodiversity footprint, along with chicken jalfrezi and chicken chaat, according to a new study analysing 151 popular local dishes from around the world. However, researchers found that dishes with beef as the main ingredient such as fraldinha — beef cut dish originating from Brazil — formed the bulk of the top 20. Chili con carne (spicy stew with chili peppers, beef and beans) and beef tartare were other such dishes. The scientists from National University of Singapore analysed lists of popular dishes taken from CNN.com and TasteAtlas.com to estimate their biodiversity footprints when globally and locally produced. The researchers found that dishes made from ingredients like beef, legumes and rice encroaching on biodiversity hotspots with already very high agricultural pressure such as India end up having a high biodiversity footprint.

GenAI is a force multiplier for human capability. And India is the testbed
BENGALURU : Artificial intelligence and generative AI, or GenAI, will inevitably disrupt existing roles, but that will also mean the emergence of new roles. McKinsey & Co.’s research, in fact, predicts that tech jobs will grow by 14% across all industries by 2032. For CEOs and other senior corporate leaders, that would mean thinking about the future of work with technology as a core element of everything they do, says Jacky Wright, McKinsey’s first-ever chief technology and platform officer.
