US seeks six-month extension to science agreement with China
China so that it can undergo negotiations with Beijing to «amend and strengthen» the landmark deal, the State Department said on Wednesday. For over 40 years, the agreement between the two countries has yielded cooperation across a range of scientific and technical fields, a powerful sign that the rivals could set aside their disputes and work together. The deal, signed when Beijing and Washington established diplomatic ties in 1979 and renewed about every five years since, has resulted in cooperation in areas from atmospheric and agricultural science to basic research in physics and chemistry. But concerns about China's growing military prowess and theft of U.S. scientific and commercial achievements have prompted questions about whether the Science and Technology Agreement (STA), set to expire on Aug. 27, should continue. «This short-term six-month extension will keep the agreement in force while we seek authority to undertake negotiations to amend and strengthen the terms of the STA. It does not commit the United States to a longer-term extension,» a State Department spokesperson told Reuters.

Russia removes 'General Armageddon' as air force chief after mutiny-related disappearance
Sergei Surovikin, nicknamed "General Armageddon", as head of the air force after he vanished from public view during a Wagner mercenary mutiny against the top army brass, two Russian news outlets reported on Wednesday. A recipient of Russia's top military award, Surovikin is the most senior Russian military figure to lose his job over the June 23-34 mutiny, which President Vladimir Putin said could have tipped Russia into civil war. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who spearheaded the revolt, remains free and on Monday posted a video address which he suggested was shot in Africa. The two men Prigozhin had wanted to topple — Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, chief of general staff — remain in their posts. Once commander of Russia's overall war effort in Ukraine when he was lauded by Russian and Western military experts as one of its most effective operators, Surovikin has not yet been publicly fired. However, Russian state news agency RIA cited an unnamed but «informed» source as saying: «Ex-chief of the Russian Air and Space Forces Sergei Surovikin has now been relieved of his post, while Colonel-General Viktor Afzalov, head of the main staff of the Air Force, is temporarily acting as commander-in-chief of the Air Force».

WeWork tapping advisers for restructuring help: report
WeWork is tapping advisers for restructuring advice as it struggles with a heavy debt load and poor financial performance, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of the Softbank Group-backed WeWork fell about 15% to 0.12 cents in afternoon trade. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) suspended trading in WeWork's warrants on Tuesday due to «abnormally low» trading price levels and said will initiate proceedings to delist them. The flexible workspace provider has hired real estate adviser Hilco Global, engaged consultant Alvarez & Marsal and re-engaged law firm Kirkland & Ellis for advice on its options, according to the report. The company is seeking to avoid a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and restructure its debts out of court, the report added citing a person familiar with the matter. WeWork, Hilco Global, Alvarez & Marsal and Kirkland & Ellis did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Rupee posts best day in 2 months on equity inflows, banks' dlr sales
rupee posted its biggest one-day gain in more than two months on Wednesday, traders said, likely due to dollar inflows into the equity markets while state-run banks also sold the greenback. The rupee closed up 0.3% at 82.6850 to the dollar, compared with its close of 82.9350 in the previous session. State-run banks selling the greenback, especially in the last hour or so, pulled the pair down, a trader with a state-run bank said. In a move to reduce pressure on the local unit, India's central bank has also asked some banks to stop taking fresh arbitrage positions in the non-deliverable forwards (NDF) market, sources told Reuters. «I have been hearing about IPO and QIP flows but difficult to know for sure in this kind of price action,» a senior forex trader at a private bank said. The rupee managed to hold above 83 despite the dollar's advance against most Asian peers. A move higher on near-maturity U.S. Treasury yields hurt demand for Asian currencies, while the dollar index hovered near 103.90. A resilient U.S.
