Budget 2024: IVCA seeks reconsiderations over definition of PE firms' control adopted by CCI
BENGALURU:The Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA) has sought a review of the Competition Commission of India's (CCI's) definition of control over companies by private equity (PE) funds in a meeting with the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman ahead of the Budget 2024-25.“When PE funds invest in companies, they have some rights to protect themselves that can be viewed as a control position. So, the question was if there can be an exemption for PE funds," Srini Sriniwasan, vice-chairperson of the industry body for alternative assests, told Mint in an interview on Tuesday.Besides, the IVCA discussed measures to boost domestic capital in alternative investment funds (AIFs) to finance infrastructure, credit, startups and growth companies in the pre-budget consultation meeting on 20 June. The finance minister is expected to present the budget by July end.Sriniwasan, who is also the managing director of Kotak Alternate Asset Managers Ltd, asked for more clarity on the definition of what constitutes a PE investor.

New technology can keep whales safe from speeding ships
On March 3rd a whale calf washed ashore in Georgia, on America’s east coast, bearing slash marks characteristic of a ship’s propeller. Less than a month later another whale, a recent mother, was found floating off the coast of Virginia. Her back was broken from the blunt-force trauma of a ship collision; her calf, missing and still meant to be nursing, is not expected to live.

Is it a good time to play the urban consumption theme? Samit Vartak answers
«Speciality chemical is a very different ball game. I mean, it has been struggling and there are intermittent signs of it reviving, but still it is very difficult as China is dumping and the competition across the globe is huge,» says Samit Vartak, SageOne Investment Advisors. For a lot of sectors we are at the peak of optimism, they are baking in the best in terms of order inflows, etc. A couple of places where there is still sort of a lack of belief or a bit of disbelief are those like IT, FMCG, chemicals, etc. Are you saying that perhaps it is time to bet on the underperformers? Samit Vartak: I am looking at companies where I am expecting close to 25% kind of earnings growth. A lot of companies in the IT sector or FMCG will never give you that, even half of that, so they are never really part of my portfolio.

Equity investments are a good tool for long-term capital appreciation, says Devender Singhal of KMAMC
MintGenie, Singhal said that equity investments are always accompanied by higher risks and related volatility. A Special Opportunities Fund is no exception. The market is currently at valuation multiples which may not be called attractive, more so, for mid caps and small caps where the valuation premiums are above long-term averages. We don’t see a case for multiple expansions over the next couple of years (especially for mid caps and small caps).

This fund manager thinks it is the right time to bet on consumption theme. Here’s why
Amar Kalkundrikar, Fund Manager, Nippon India Mutual Fund, says at Nippon the consumption thematic is about investing into companies that provide branded goods and services to consumers. It is a play on rising incomes, aspirations, and brand consciousness of Indian consumers. As their incomes rise, consumers are interested in premiumising their experiences across categories; they go for branded products and are willing to pay for it. That is the sort of behaviour we want to capture in our portfolios. Kalkundrikar further says Nippon MF has increased exposure to sectors where mass consumption revival should benefit, that includes basic FMCG, QSR, automobiles, where we have seen recovery already starting and of course, some of these home improvement categories.
