Inflation-wary Fed may put IT revival on hold
Indian outsourcing leaders will likely have to wait longer, perhaps until the start of FY26, for a revival in business as the US Federal Reserve could keep interest rates elevated in the world’s largest economy to ensure a lasting victory over politically uncomfortable inflation. High real rates could elevate hurdle rates for companies, potentially crimping growth in discretionary technology spends. “The Fed's hawkish approach is a double-edged sword. Higher interest rates could lead US clients to curtail discretionary IT spending, impacting revenue growth for Indian firms,” said Hansa Iyengar, senior lead analyst for UK-based IT research firm Omdia.

If choice is between Narendra Modi & Rahul Gandhi, I have no doubt people will opt for Modi: Swaminathan Aiyar
Swaminathan Aiyar, Consulting Editor, ET Now, says “BJP may have many jewels, but Mr Modi is Koh-i-Noor. The biggest thing the BJP has going for it is Mr Modi. And at the end of it all, you can have 25 different analyses of different issues. But if the stark choice is, do you want Mr Narendra Modi or do you want Mr Rahul Gandhi? I have no doubt that people will opt for Mr Modi, whatever their other reservations are. Whether he gets an increased majority or a reduced majority is another matter. But even if the BJP loses 100 seats, they will get more parties with them and so surely Mr Modi will be back.” On inflation the prime minister has cited the Korean War during the Nehru regime and he has spoken about how inflation was the highest during Indira Gandhi's time. Up front, what do you make of this historical context that the prime minister is referencing on inflation and the impact of the war in Ukraine, which he says affects food, fertiliser and fuel prices directly? Swaminathan Aiyar: He recalls inflation back in the early 50s. It is a fact that the Korean War resulted in a shortage of all kinds of commodities, which were being used for the war effort on both sides. Because of that very steep rise in all commodity prices, there was an increase in price in India too. While it is true that there were a certain number of restrictions on imports, actually imports were pretty free in the early 50s. Therefore, there was an impact.

Auto retails in April were buoyed by a favourable market sentiment which was driven by stable fuel prices, a positive monsoon outlook, festive demand and the marriage season.

Blue collar and grey collar consumer jobs growing, can't offset fall in IT white collar jobs: Dr Pawan Goyal, Naukri.com
Dr Pawan Goyal, ED and Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com, says “the salary growth is expected to remain in single digits. This has moderated from the time period of 22 when the great resignation wave was underway. So, 6% to 7%, somewhere in that range is where we expect the salary growth.” We were in fact quite surprised to see the consumer side starting to witness high demand. Talk to us about that to start with from that side. Dr Pawan Goyal: If you look at the overall JobSpeak index, it has been flattish. It is minus three on a year-on-year basis and minus one on month-on-month basis. From a statistical standpoint, I would consider that flattish. Over the consumer sectors that are doing very well, is oil and gas; FMCG; travel, tourism, and hospitality; as well as auto. They have been consistently growing for several months at a time and April numbers are in line with that.

Some colleges that had been permissive of pro-Palestinian protests begin taking a tougher stance
University of Chicago on Tuesday after administrators who had initially adopted a permissive approach said the protest had crossed a line and caused growing concerns about safety. University President Paul Alivisatos acknowledged the school's role as a protector of freedom of speech after officers in riot gear blocked access to the school's Quad but also took an enough-is-enough stance. «The university remains a place where dissenting voices have many avenues to express themselves, but we cannot enable an environment where the expression of some dominates and disrupts the healthy functioning of the community for the rest,» Alivisatos wrote in a message to the university community.
