What RBI proposal for tighter project finance rules will mean for REC, PFC?
Anil Gupta, Sr VP & Co-Group Head-Financial Sector Ratings, ICRA, in conversation with ET Now on RBI proposal for tighter project finance rules. Gupta says “given the market reaction, there could be a case where maybe more clarification will emerge as to whether 5% provision requirement is on the entire under-construction portfolio of the lenders or not. Our reading is that it is only for the cases where the project is under construction and has sought a DCCO extension. If that clarification comes, it should not be really negative for the sector because it is only a positive from the balance sheet perspective of the lenders that you are taking care of the risk which has gone up because of DCCO extension. It should not be negative for the credit flow. Seeing the implication of the RBI proposal for tighter project finance rules play out on the likes of an REC and PFC, gives us a sense of the negative implication for such Anil Gupta: Basically, the regulation which has come out is harmonising the guidelines which were there for banks and NBFCs earlier. For example, today if a project defers its DCCO and that deferment is within a period of two years, the standard asset provisioning norm for a bank is 0.4% and for an NBFC it is 0.25%. Now what this circular is saying is that even if there is a deferment of DCCO within a period of two years, because there have been some deterioration in the project fundamentals, the standard asset provisioning should increase to 5%.

We expect strong momentum to continue in business: Warren Harris, Tata Tech
«We are always going to have an exposure to new energy vehicle companies because a lot of innovation comes from those companies but there are some volatility issues that we have to grapple with and I think we have successfully done that in the context of the last fiscal year. So, we are very pleased with FY24 and the solid finish to the year that we had in Q4,» says Warren Harris, CEO & MD, Tata Tech. What has led to the revenue softness in the fourth quarter, especially the services segment for you? I would challenge the perception that growth has not been strong. If we look at the full year, we grew our business by 15.9% in Indian rupees. If we look at services specifically, we grew over 13%. I signalled in January that we had some runoff at VinFast as we transitioned from the completion of our engineering work to launch support.

Intrinsic opportunity for jewellery business very strong: CK Venkataraman, Titan Company
«Actually, the intrinsic opportunity for the jewellery business of Titan is very-very strong. And I think post the election, there will be a certain stable demand as well,» says CK Venkataraman, MD, Titan Company. If I put the numbers in perspective for our viewers and looking at what brokerages have said, brokerages are of the view that for Titan it is an okay quarter, it is not like a grand quarter. Perhaps, they were expecting a bit more. They are of the view that gold prices and competition has increased which in a sense was the problem point for Titan for the quarter gone by and could linger along for next couple of quarters. Is that true? Actually, we have certainly been investing a fair amount in growth. Growth has been our focus mantra for a while. And yes, the kind of sales growth that the quarters saw and what was announced also a few weeks back, the margin growth, I guess was not in line with that expectation.

Warren Buffett says AI may be better for scammers than society: he's seen how
Warren Buffett cautioned the tens of thousands of shareholders who packed an arena for his annual meeting that artificial intelligence scams could become «the growth industry of all time.» Doubling down on his cautionary words from last year, Buffett told the throngs he recently came face to face with the downside of AI. And it looked and sounded just like him. Someone made a fake video of Buffett, apparently convincing enough that the so-called Oracle of Omaha himself said he could imagine it tricking him into sending money overseas.

Lok Sabha Polls: Locals point to lack of jobs in Bengal's Murshidabad
Murshidabad constituency. They are ghost villages, with hardly any youth left to even bury the dead. 80-90% of the men from Raninagar, Jalangi and Domkal assembly segments under Murshidabad constituency are in Kerala, Karnataka, Hyderabad and Maharashtra where they work as migrant workers. Lack of employment opportunities have forced most of the young to middle-aged men to head South for better wages. Hasibul Rehman from Murshidabad's Jalangi has visited Kerala twice for work and worked as a labourer in a factory. He has not gone to school but is the sole earner in his family in Sahebrampur village of Murshidabad constituency which goes to polls on May 7 in the third phase. Abdus Sabur, a middle-aged man, who frequented Kerala from mid 1990s to 2005, now runs a truck business in Jalangi's Naccherpara. «You will not find a single household from where the men have not visited Kerala. They do all sorts of jobs as daily labourers — lifting soil, cutting ponds, construction work, plumbing, coconut picking and even cleaning drains. Most of the men from Jalangi are in Kerala,» Saber told ET.

NEET: 'Incorrect distribution' of papers at Rajasthan centre, exam reconducted for 120 candidates
NEET exam centre in Rajasthan on Sunday led to some candidates walking out with the papers, the National Testing Agency (NTA) said, claiming the integrity of the examination process was not compromised. The exam was later reconducted for the 120 affected candidates at the centre, said Sadhna Parashar, Senior Director, NTA. According to NTA sources, some candidates were distributed question papers in languages other than their choice of medium which prompted them to walk out of the centre. «During NEET-UG examination, it came to attention that at one exam centre, Girls Higher Secondary Model School, Mantown, Sawai Madhopur, there was an incident of incorrect distribution of question papers by the centre superintendent. Despite efforts by invigilators to prevent it, some candidates left the exam centre with the question papers,» Parashar said.

What to expect from the next generation of chatbots: OpenAI's GPT-5 and Meta's Llama-3
OpenAI's ChatGPT AI-powered chatbot and Meta's Llama system, which powers the company's chatbots across Facebook and Instagram. The technology behind these systems is known as a large language model (LLM). These are artificial neural networks, a type of AI designed to mimic the human brain. They can generate general purpose text, for chatbots, and perform language processing tasks such as classifying concepts, analysing data and translating text. They acquire these abilities through an intensive process known as training, where the AI system is exposed to vast amounts of data in an effort to improve what it does.
