Putin plans big Indian soft power promotion; to discuss Indian movies in Russia with Modi
soft power quotient will get a boost with Russian President Vladimir Putin planning to discuss promotion of Indian cinema with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting Tuesday on the eve of the BRICS Summit here. Putin recently said Indian cinema is more popular in Russia than entertainment from any other BRICS country. Russia has a dedicated TV channel that plays Bollywood movies «day and night», he said. This was the first time Putin has brought up the issue of the soft power quotient in the India-Russia partnership. Bollywood movies have been extremely popular in the erstwhile Soviet Union. Raj Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty and Hema Malini are cult figures across the ex-Soviet republics. Yet Russia has not been chosen by the Indian film industry as a location for film shootings.

Does India really need a central bank digital currency?
This may be the case with central bank digital currency (CBDC). Announced in Nirmala Sitharaman's 2022 budget speech to bolster the unfounded belief that private virtual currencies (PVCs) like bitcoin, upon which an unpopular tax was levied, posed a threat that only a CBDC could counter, RBI was forced to railroad this project into the list of commercial bank priorities, and public consciousness. Had it been possible to rectify the misconception of its eminence grise, e₹ might never have been. After all, the capital gains tax on the sale of PVCs showed that GoI treated them as speculative assets rather than as competitive currencies. In any case, bitcoin did not threaten rupee transactions.

The Blue Umbrella
Binya seldom closed the blue umbrella. Even when she had it in the house, she left it lying open in a corner of the room. Sometimes Bijju snapped it shut, complaining that it got in the way. She would open it again a little later. It wasn't beautiful when it was closed. Whenever Binya went out… she took the umbrella with her. That patch of sky- blue silk could always be seen on the hillside. Old Ram Bharosa kept the tea shop on the Tehri road… 'What have you there, Binya?' he asked.

India’s diplomatic tightrope: Kazan summit marks key moment in global leadership role
BRICS meets for the first time in Kazan, Russia, a potential inflexion point for a group that has so far failed to have an unifying narrative. India has been the bulwark against the attempt to give it an ideological 'anti-West' slant. India could continue to play that role or, better still, leverage the expanded membership — each new member was on its wish list — to define India's neutral pathway. Kazan is not just another BRICS summit. It's a critical moment in India's self-fashioning journey on the global stage. From the moment Russia invaded Ukraine, India has argued its choices in terms of multipolarity, historical ties, defence needs, strategic alliances and partnerships, and economic needs. Kazan offers India an opportunity to emerge not as the ace tightrope walker balancing West and 'anti- and not-so-pro-West' interests, but as a proactive neutral voice committed to a rules-based world order. Kazan should provide the occasion when it can emerge as the 'Switzerland' of our times.

China agrees to India's patrolling rights in Depsang, next step de-escalation
Details of the patrolling agreement are yet to be shared but disengagement of troops at both Depsang, where Chinese soldiers had blocked access to patrolling points by occupying the 'Y Junction', and Demchock, where tents had been erected Indian side of LAC, was vital to move to the next step of de-escalation. A larger de-escalation- in which forward deployed troops inducted in thousands since tensions broke out in 2020 will be moved back to their peacetime locations — has been the focus of talks from the Indian side.

India, China reach patrolling agreement in Ladakh, boosting prospects for Modi-Xi meeting at BRICS Summit
BRICS summit, the Modi government has said that India and China have reached an agreement to resume patrolling in eastern Ladakh. The development has brightened chances of a meeting between PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on the sidelines of the summit. «Over the last several weeks, Indian and Chinese diplomatic and military negotiators have been in close contact with each other in a variety of forums. As a result of the discussions that have taken place over the last several weeks, an agreement has been arrived at on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in the India-China border area and this is leading to disengagement and eventually a resolution of the issues that had arisen in these areas in 2020,» foreign secretary Vikram Misri said at a media briefing. Indian and Chinese soldiers will be able to resume patrolling in the way they had been doing before the border face-off in May 2020, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said at a media event. He said LAC breakthrough is a good development that happened due to «patient and persevering diplomacy».

Ishan Kishan returns, Ruturaj Gaikwad named captain of India A team for Australia tour
Ishan Kishan returned to the national reckoning as he was on Monday named in a 15-member India A squad, to be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, for the upcoming tour of Australia. Vegan food influencer gushes about her ‘guilt-free plate’, gets schooled by meat lovers
food content creator who shared a photo of her meal consisting of rice and dal, proudly expressing her commitment to a vegetarian lifestyle. In her post, she declared that her “plate is free from tears, cruelty, and guilt,” sparking a backlash. Many found her statement offensive, accusing her of being judgmental and dismissive of those who choose to eat meat. While a few supported her stance, the majority of responses disagreed with her point of view. Numerous social media users emphasized that no one has the authority to dictate others' dietary choices. Some made thoughtful remarks, noting that plants also experience pain. Meanwhile, others, mocking her post, shared images of their plates filled with various meat dishes, defending their right to enjoy non-vegetarian food.

The scandal of the Indonesian leader's son and the private jet
On board that August flight from Jakarta to Los Angeles were Kaesang Pangarep, the younger son of President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, and Kaesang's wife, Erina Gudono. Details of the trip trickled out on Erina's social media accounts: a $1,500 stroller for their soon-to-be-born baby and a $25 lobster roll for lunch. Her posts were seen as tone deaf and led to an uproar at home because most Indonesians cannot afford luxury items. But what made many furious was the fact that the couple traveled on a private jet. It was the antithesis of the Everyman image Joko has long projected. The plane was linked to Shopee, the operator of an online mall. The company had planned to construct a new building in the city of Solo, where Joko began his political career and where until recently the mayor was his older son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

US wants end to Israel-Hezbollah war 'as soon as possible'
Israel-Hezbollah war to end «as soon as possible», as it pressed for the enforcement of a UN resolution that required the armed group to withdraw from south Lebanon. US envoy Amos Hochstein held talks in Lebanon's capital with parliament speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, in a push for an end to a nearly month-long war that has killed more than 1,470 people in Lebanon. «Tying Lebanon's future to other conflicts in the region was not and is not in the interest of the Lebanese people,» Hochstein said, referring to a key Hezbollah demand that any ceasefire in Lebanon be linked to an end to the war in Gaza.
