China employs hackers and celebrities to undermine Taiwan
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. As Beijing dispatched its military Monday in a show of force that encircled Taiwan, China’s coast guard posted a map showing its ships ringing the island in a heart-shaped formation, describing it as “an act of love." To Taiwan, the social-media message was just one piece of China’s multifaceted campaign to intimidate, isolate and influence the people and leaders of the island democracy to give up their commitment to self-rule. Alongside its most high-profile tactic—sending a message of military dominance—China is employing what Taiwan says is an expanding army of hackers, diplomats, prosecutors and celebrities in its effort to persuade Taiwan to submit to Beijing.

Harris steps into lion's den with Fox interview
Donald Trump seeks to use the same network to connect with female voters wary of his record. Democratic nominee Harris will sit down with the conservative-leaning broadcaster in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, her most dramatic move yet as she carpets the airwaves to reach out to wavering Republican voters who have tired of Trump's dark rhetoric. The White House race is neck-and-neck nationally and in swing states with less than three weeks to go, and both candidates are increasingly looking for ways to gain momentum.

No food, no water: Man survives 2 months lost at sea, loses half his weight
Mikhail Pichugin, 46, was discovered severely malnourished, having lost 50 kilograms (110 pounds) during his time at sea. Authorities confirmed that the bodies of his 49-year-old brother, Sergei, and 15-year-old nephew, Ilya, were found on board the small rubber boat, marking a tragic end to the family’s voyage. The three, according to a Moscow Times report, had embarked on a whale-watching trip from the Khabarovsk region in early August. Their plan was to explore the Shantar Islands, located off the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, with the intention of returning by August 9. When they failed to arrive back as scheduled, a search and rescue operation was launched, but the group’s boat was nowhere to be found. Pichugin’s ordeal ended late Monday when a fishing vessel spotted him near the Kamchatka Peninsula, approximately 23 kilometers (12 miles) offshore. This location was more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) east of the Shantar Islands, where the trio was last seen. Pichugin was immediately taken to a hospital in the Magadan region for treatment after his rescue.

But they were created by artificial intelligence, and researchers fear they are muddying the waters of real history.
