Core sectors' output shrinks 1.8% in Aug on heavy showers
infrastructure industries shrank 1.8% in August from a year earlier, the first contraction in 42 months, compared with 6.1% expansion in the preceding month, according to the official data released on Monday. Experts blamed heavy seasonal showers in August over large swathes of the country, on top of an unfavourable base effect, for the slump. Given their 40% weight in the index of industrial production (IIP), the poor show by the infrastructure industries could limit the August index of industrial production (IIP) expansion to just 1-1.5%, against 4.8% in July, experts said. IIP data for August will be released on October 12. Apart from steel and fertilisers, six of the eight industries-coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, cement and electricity-remained in the negative zone in August, the latest data showed.

Inventory overhang in Indian real estate at record low due to robust sale
inventory overhang (the estimated time required to sell off unsold stock based on sales velocity) has dropped to 22 months in the June quarter, down from 34 months in the corresponding quarter last year. According to PropTiger.com report, NCR's Gurugram witnessed a substantial decline in inventory overhang from 72 months in Q2 2023 to 31 months in Q2 2024. Ahmedabad also showed strong performance, reducing its inventory overhang from 33 months to 18 months during the same period, reflecting the healthy demand dynamics in these markets. Regarding unsold inventory, the report said that despite a moderation in supply and absorption rates, India’s residential real estate market displayed resilience, achieving a 2% year-on-year decline, bringing the total to over 9.26 lakh units as of June 30.

Jammu and Kashmir voter turnout improves after terror attacks drop to 23 in 2024, from 222 in 2014
According to a Times of India report, terror-related incidents have dropped to one-tenth of the levels seen a decade ago. This year's assembly elections, the first since the nullification of Article 370 and J&K's reorganisation into a Union Territory in 2019, have witnessed peaceful polling in several areas of Kashmir, an official confirmed. While the Kashmir Valley recorded positive voter participation, turnout percentages in most of Jammu division, where voting has concluded, have dipped compared to 2014. According to officials, the decline could be linked to the recent surge in terror activities in the region. As of September 27, 15 terror-related attacks and encounters had resulted in the deaths of 11 civilians and 17 security personnel in Jammu.

Hybrid car sales surge amid global policy push
Policy push by various countries and stricter emission norms are fuelling electric vehicle sales every year across key global markets, shows data from the International Energy Agency. However, penetration of hybrids (including strong hybrids and plug-in hybrids), driven purely by consumer choice, are climbing up at a faster pace. Since 2021, hybrid vehicle sales have been rising steadily in China, Japan, Korea, UK, France, and US, underscoring growing consumer preference for this technology, shows data collated by Nomura Research Institute. China leads the trend with a nearly fourfold surge in hybrid penetration levels to 19.9% in the first half of 2024 from 5.3% in 2021. Korea too has seen a big jump — to 25.2% from 11.8% in the same period. Other markets have shown a similar growth trajectory.

Lavasa creditors set eligibility floor to begin resolution 2.0
Lavasa Corp, which was once touted as India's first private hill town project, have set an eligibility criteria of ₹100 crore net worth and a ₹25 lakh refundable deposit for new expressions of interest (EOIs) from prospective bidders as they try to find a buyer for a second time after junking the previous attempt earlier this year. The minutes of the meeting of the committee of creditors (CoC) held on September 17 show that 77% of lenders led by Union Bank of India (UBI) have agreed to a minimum criteria for bidders which is a change from the last time the process ran without any eligible criteria to «maximise participation» of applicants. «Besides this eligibility criteria, lenders also want to make certain changes with most likely a new resolution professional (RP) in place of Shailesh Verma and a process advisor to make way in place of Deloitte as both have been in charge for long and has presided over a what has been a failed process prior to this,» said a person aware of the matter. A joint lenders forum (JLF) called by UBI is expected to finalise timelines and appointment of a new RP as early as next week as lenders pick up the pieces after many twists and turns in the case.
