State Antony Blinken on Thursday said that a temporary truce between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas had produced results and that the United States hoped that it continued. JSW Infrastructure on Wednesday said it has signed an agreement with the Karnataka government to develop a Rs 4,119 crore greenfield port project in the southern state. The agreement has been signed between its subsidiary company Masad Infra Services Pvt Ltd and Karnataka Maritime Board, JSW Infrastructure said in an exchange filing.

TOKYO : A crew member who was recovered from the ocean after a US military Osprey aircraft carrying six people crashed Wednesday off southern Japan has been pronounced dead, coast guard officials said. The cause of the crash and the status of the five others on the aircraft were not immediately known, coast guard spokesperson Kazuo Ogawa said. Initial reports said the aircraft was carrying eight people, but the US military later revised the number to six, he said.

Israel released more hostages and prisoners under terms of a fragile cease-fire that held for a fifth day Tuesday as international mediators in Qatar worked to extend the truce and the United States urged Israel to better protect Palestinian civilians in Gaza if it follows through on its promise to resume the war. In the latest swap since the cease-fire began Friday, Israel said 10 of its citizens and two Thai nationals were freed by Hamas and had been returned to Israel.

Erratic rains have disrupted rice and potato cultivation, causing an increase of up to 12% in prices of these two essential staples of Indian households over the past month. Even though the government has banned exports of non-basmati rice, prices have shot up by 15% amid increased demand from south India where patchy rains in Karnataka have reduced kharif rice production. On the other hand, unpredictable rainfall in October has impacted sowing of the new potato crop, which will delay the arrival of the new crop, pushing up prices of the old stock of potatoes. Southern states are increasingly buying rice from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, inflating prices across the country. The Centre had banned exports of non-basmati rice from July 20 to ensure adequate supply in the domestic market and to control prices. Basmati rice prices have also shot up by 10% due to robust export demand from the Middle East. Suraj Agarwal, CEO of RiceVilla, a rice marketing and exporting company said, «Non-basmati rice prices have gone up as there was scarcity of rains in southern India leading to a shortage in supply.» He added that prices may remain firm over the next three to four months due to the expected impact of El Nino till the next summer crop in April 2024. According to the first advance estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, India's rice production has been pegged at 1,06.31 million metric tonnes, a 3.7% dip from the same season of last year. Interestingly, the decline is despite an increase in the area under kharif paddy production.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York has finalized the dismissal of a class action lawsuit against Tether and Bitfinex. This lawsuit, initially filed by plaintiffs Shawn Dolifka and Matthew Anderson in 2021, targeted the stablecoin issuer Tether and its affiliated company Bitfinex. The primary allegation centered on the claim that Tether’s USDT stablecoin was not backed one-to-one with U.S. dollars as the company had stated. The plaintiffs argued that Tether and Bitfinex did not maintain adequate reserves for the USDT in circulation, thereby misleading investors and the market​​​​.

Israeli defence forces have completely destroyed Hamas's infrastructure in northern Gaza except the underground tunnels and the focus at the end of the current pause in fighting will be to clean up the southern part of the strip, Israeli Ambassador Naor Gilon said on Tuesday. Hamas fighters from Gaza have agreed to release more hostage as part of the pause, and aims to delay the expected resumption of the war. Meanwhile, Israel has been under growing pressure to spare Palestinian civilians when it renews its offensive.
