There is a ring of truth to tariff hike
telecom companies, among the fiercest price warriors, have finally seen the light. They are raising tariffs, hoping Indians hooked on to prodigious amounts of data at dirt cheap rates won't be able to kick their browsing habit. It is a calculated gamble by Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea to raise revenue per subscriber to fund network expansion.

Ravi Shastri wants fewer test teams, MCC chief backs T20 in changing landscape
test cricket to six or seven teams and using the 20-overs format as the vehicle to spread the game were some of the views aired at a symposium organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Sunday. Test cricket's dwindling appeal outside India, England and Australia has coincided with the proliferation of lucrative T20 leagues across the world. Although test cricket at the top level still often produces drama, the brevity and action-packed nature of 20-overs cricket has quickly made it the preferred format for the game's new fans.

ReCircle’s new textile vertical aims to process 570 MT of textile waste a year
waste management firm ReCircle has entered the textile waste management vertical with a target to process 570 million tonnes (MT) of textile waste in 12 months. The company recently launched Project Extra Life to tackle India’s textile waste problem and build a more sustainable circular economy. Until now, ReCircle has focussed on managing plastic and paper waste. In FY24, it diverted 65,364 tonnes of waste — paper, plastic, cardboard and e-waste. “We’re constantly innovating to digitise the waste supply chain, create meaningful opportunities for informal waste workers, build a closed-loop system to extend the life cycle of waste and empower India to move towards a circular future — one piece of trash at a time,” says Rahul Nainani, Co-Founder & CEO, ReCircle.

Pakistan's public sector enterprises suffocate under mounting PKR 1.7 trillion debt
Pakistan government's efforts to reform its public sector enterprises (PSEs) have been marred by persistent challenges, as highlighted by recent fiscal data and international funding initiatives, Dawn reported. Despite a substantial loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aimed at bolstering reforms, the cumulative debt of PSEs has soared to PKR 1.7 trillion, with an additional borrowing exceeding Rs 43 billion in the fiscal year 2024. Economic priorities underscore the urgency of privatising PSEs to alleviate the strain on the national budget, a crucial step also mandated for securing future loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The allocation for PSEs in the 2024-25 budget saw a dramatic increase, reaching PKR 1.267 trillion, largely earmarked for subsidies and grants, marking a 104 per cent surge from the previous fiscal year.

Fed postpones rate cut until 'greater confidence' in sustainable inflation levels
Powell's comments came on Tuesday (9 July) during a Congress presentation of the semi-annual monetary policy report published on 5 July. However, Powell added, recent US market indicators highlighted continuous economic expansion, with private domestic demand remaining «robust». In Ju...
