Assam's 'disease' is population: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday asserted in the Assembly that high population is a «disease» for the state, which impacts its performance in various parameters. He also maintained that the state's poor performance in a nationwide cleanliness survey «is a reflection on the people as a whole rather than the government», as he pitched for a 'proper citizens' movement'. Taking part in a discussion on the state Budget, Sarma said the state's performance in terms of percentage cannot be compared with Arunachal Pradesh or Meghalaya, which have a much lower population than Assam. «Our population burden affects our performance in terms of percentage. Population vis-a-vis students determine the percentage», he said, referring to opposition Congress MLA Bharat Chandra Narah pointing out that Assam's gross enrolment ratio (GER) was much less than the national average.

Severe symptoms of menopause linked to dementia, study suggests
menopause can act as early warning signs for dementia.Dr. Zahinoor Ismail, a professor of psychiatry, neurology, epidemiology and pathology at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, said the result comes from an ongoing cross-sectional study about Canadian brains and aging from CAN-PROTECT.Ismail said his initial interest in the effects of menopause was sparked years ago in his medical practice.“I remember a case from early 2001 with a woman who presented in the emergency room with a whole host of brain symptoms, both cognition and psychiatric, and it turned out she was just in early menopause,” Ismail told The Canadian Press.“So instead of treating her for these neurological and psychiatric conditions, we normalized her estrogen and her symptoms resolved.“That was the genesis of this study.”The overall study involves 2,400 people across Canada, who are asked a number of questions about their cognition, behaviour, function, health, wellness, lifestyle, diet, exercise, vitamin supplements, medications, medical and psychiatric conditions and quality of life.Data from 800 of those subjects is being used to study the effects of menopause on the brain.

We might be closer to finding quick ways to diagnose and treat long covid
A new study published this week in Science makes a compelling case that people with long covid have a chronic imbalance in their immune response. The findings don’t explain why that immune response is out of whack, and needs confirming in larger studies. This is important new piece to the vexing puzzle that is long covid.

Have a cough that just won’t quit? Here’s what it may be
respiratory illnesses surge across the country, the persistence of a cough that just won’t quit may be prompting some to wonder if there is a deeper underlying issue. This lingering cough is what Nicholas Vozoris, an assistant professor and staff respirologist at Saint Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, calls a “post-infectious cough” and it can last as long as eight weeks.“This is a cough that seems to linger after the other infectious symptoms settle down,” he said. “And this post-infectious cough is known to possibly occur with viral or bacterial respiratory tract infections.”While doctors like Vozoris have long been familiar with post-infectious cough as a condition, he believes it may not be widely recognized by the public. He noted that many patients are often surprised when hearing about this diagnosis.

Canadians brace for another winter storm. Here’s what you can expect
another storm.A major snow storm is set to hit several regions in Ontario and Quebec, while many residents in Western Canada fight through a severe cold snap. This latest weather comes after another system hit many parts of Canada earlier in the week; Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City were hit with snowfall Tuesday and Wednesday; the Maritimes also saw snowfall; parts of the West Coast dealt with winter weather before then, while the Prairies faced an extreme cold warning.Expected to start late Friday and into Saturday, parts of Ontario and Quebec are set to see another wallop of snow.Global News meteorologist Ross Hull said a Texas low will be moving into the Great Lakes area, adding the difference with the upcoming storm is that there’s more cold air available that’s building over the Prairies. He said that means there will likely be more snow before a transition to rain, especially for cities such as Toronto, closer to Lake Ontario.“The last system dropped five to 10 centimetres of wet snow for the GTHA. With this one we are anticipating more, but it’s still too early to pin down exact amounts,” Hull said Thursday.“Areas that did experience heavy snow with the most recent system will likely see the heaviest amounts with this latest disturbance too.”Environment Canada is forecasting five to 10 centimetres of snow; Ottawa, which was forecast to get 10 to 15 centimetres of snow earlier in the week, is expected to get 15 to 25 centimetres of snow in this system.

View: What lies ahead for ITeS sector & how GoI can play its part
ITeS sector has come through a turbulent 2023 due to challenged growth, squeezed profit margins and fewer people on the payroll than in 2022. Many cite these developments as a symptom of the sector's decline and blame AI for the crisis. Depending upon which source one believes, the headcount in the sector has reduced between 5% and 10%. From a societal perspective, this is terrible news because the industry in the last three decades has:

JN.1 is Canada’s new dominant COVID-19 subvariant. Here’s what to know
COVID-19 subvariant, known as JN.1, has emerged and is now the prevailing strain across Canada, prompting health experts to caution that it may be more infectious and could even have extra symptoms.Currently, the subvariant makes up the highest proportion of all COVID-19 variants, accounting for more than half (51. 9 per cent) of all infections in Canada, according to the latest data from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).JN.1 was first detected in Canada on Oct. 9, and since then has rapidly increased.“If this virus continues to circulate at high levels, that means more virus, which means more mutations and more evolution, which means more of this same kind of issue happening repeatedly,” warned Ryan Gregory, a professor of integrative biology at the University of Guelph, and evolutionary biologist. On Dec.

End of panic attacks? A new brain discovery may find a solution. Know in detail
brain circuit consisting of neurons and the circuit regulates panic-like symptoms in mice. Their findings were published Thursday in the journal Nature Neuroscience. The findings of the researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California have been published in the journal 'Nature Neuroscience'. Strep A cases are rising in Canada. What symptoms to watch for
strep A cases have been on the rise in the past year, with invasive disease resulting in hospitalizations and some deaths among children.“Early data indicates that iGAS disease activity in 2023 is higher compared to pre-pandemic years, particularly in children under 15 years of age,” the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) told Global News in an emailed statement.Invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) has been identified collectively by the federal, provincial and territorial governments as a priority for monitoring and control and must be reported to the public health authorities, PHAC said.iGAS occurs when the bacteria cause deeper infections and are isolated from a normally sterile body site, such as the blood, the agency said.Respiratory viruses like influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can raise the likelihood of getting sick with strep A, said Dr. Brian Conway, medical director of the Vancouver Infectious Diseases Centre.Strep A are bacteria found on the skin and throat that can cause a wide range of diseases in children and adults.
