To hike or not to hike? RBI watchers on guard for shift
policy decision on Thursday even though most expect he’ll keep interest rates unchanged again. Global markets have been roiled in recent weeks by central bank action, with the Bank of England cutting interest rates last week, the Bank of Japan hiking, and the Federal Reserve preparing to ease amid recession fears. That may give the Reserve Bank of India reason to stay cautious after keeping rates steady for 18 months already. But there is a chance the RBI may signal a pivot is coming months. Thursday will be the last rate decision of the six-member monetary policy committee before its current four-year term expires in October. Some economists expect the MPC may want to go out with a bang by possibly setting the stage for policy easing.

Stay very selective in real estate stocks; any kind of price correction should be a good opportunity to buy: Pankaj Pandey
«Real estate as a sector is looking attractive to us. The only challenge is that the valuations have gone up. So, one needs to be very selective in real estate, but any kind of a price correction should be a good opportunity to buy,» says Pankaj Pandey, Head Research, ICICIdirect.com. How have you read into the standalone quarterly numbers for PB Fintech, which has been pretty strong and completely different aside of that is Cummins as well, where the profits grew about 33%? Pankaj Pandey: So, do not cover both the stocks, but if I have to talk on, say, for example, Shree Cement, the numbers are definitely below expectation. While we might see volume growth going forward because they are expanding their capacities by 15 million tonnes. But cement is seeing a lower realisation, largely more in southern markets. But in general, you see a softness in the prices and probably that is going to be there for another quarter.

Performance on sustainability targets shapes top execs' pay
performance-based pay of their chief executives and senior management, to factor in the company's sustainability goal outcomes in appraisal KPIs amid their increasing influence on investor and consumer sentiments. Companies including ITC, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Mahindra & Mahindra, Lupin, Cipla and Emaar have started to link their performance in areas like water and carbon positivity, plastic neutrality, climate-resilience, and diversity and inclusion in hiring to the remuneration of their senior management. This comes at a time when ESG (environment, social and governance practices) is becoming a buzz word in business deals, investment decisions and even consumer response to products, industry experts and executives said. ESG goals are becoming more common in annual KPIs (key performance indicators) for executive leaders, said Anandorup Ghose, partner at Deloitte India. While the weightage to these goals varies by industry, approximately around 10-15% weightage is assigned to ESG-linked metrics, he said.

₹25 lakh segment, which has the highest sales volumes India. The brand, part of the multinational automotive giant Stellantis, has struggled in its eight-plus years in India – Its models like the Compass and Meridian have made little headway, largely owing to their relatively high prices, and the lack of a 'mass-market' product. Now, it may be set to change that.

India stands out on growth and external fronts amongst South Asian economies: S&P Ratings
fiscal deficit will decide on the direction of sovereign ratings. S&P Director, Sovereign and International Public Finance Ratings (Asia-Pacific), Andrew Wood said the rating agency sees a lot of promise in India's economic growth story even though the global economic growth outlook remains somewhat challenging. «We could raise the rating if India's fiscal deficit narrows meaningfully such that change in net general government deficit falls below 7 per cent of GDP on a structural basis,» Wood said at a webinar on Asia-Pacific.

Ahmedabad crypto exchange gets Rs 722 crore GST notice, a first for crypto sector
GST Intelligence (DGGI) has issued a show-cause notice to a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, demanding a Goods and Services Tax (GST) payment of Rs 722 crore, ToI reported on August 6. This unprecedented action marks the first time the DGGI has targeted a cryptocurrency firm, setting a significant precedent in India’s regulation of the burgeoning virtual currency market, said the report (by Niyati Parikh). The notice was issued for fees collected from Indian customers trading in virtual digital assets (VDAs) on the platform, categorized under online information database access or retrieval (OIDAR) services. Earlier this year, the cryptocurrency exchange had received approval from India's financial intelligence unit (FIU) to register as a virtual asset service provider (VASP). However, the company was recently penalized Rs 18 crore by the FIU for failing to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. Despite being a major global player with a substantial market share and operations in multiple countries, the company had not registered under the Indian GST framework, leading to scrutiny from Indian tax authorities. It was revealed that the company earned at least Rs 4,000 crore from transaction fees charged to Indian customers, with these earnings credited to an account of a group company based abroad. The company has a global user base of 90 million, including a significant number of Indian customers.

Bangla-dashed: Sheikh Hasina resigns, flees to India; protesters storm residence; military in charge
Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh for India on Monday seemingly just ahead of protesters storming their way into the Prime Minister's residence in Dhaka as month-long protests led by students over job quotas boiled over into an uprising. As many as 300 people have been killed since the protest began in July. A plane carrying Hasina, 76, landed at the Hindon Indian Air Force base just outside the capital as New Delhi worked out a safe passage for its long-standing ally in the region. Her final destination isn't clear. While some reports said she may go into exile in London, there is a possibility that she might depart for a destination in eastern or southern Europe. Belarus may be one of the possible destinations. Back in Dhaka, the country's army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said on state television that, with Sheikh Hasina having resigned, the military would form a caretaker government, following meetings with political parties.

Therefore, the bank does not feel the need to raise deposits through aggressive pricing. Even though the net interest margin (NIM) in percentage terms came down by 12 basis points year-on-year to 3.35%, the lower growth in deposits vis-a-vis advances meant that absolute net interest income rose by 5.7% to ₹41,135 crore.

Why food inflation cannot be excluded from target inflation
inflation minus the food and beverages category—was both lower and less volatile than overall headline inflation. By April 2023, non-food inflation had fallen within the Reserve Bank of India's upper tolerance band of 6%, and by September 2023, it was slightly below the 4% target. Headline inflation, on the other hand, has remained around 5% since early 2024.

With its population of 1.4 billion and a massive manufacturing industry, China is by far the world's largest emitter of the greenhouse gases that scientists say drive climate change and make extreme weather more frequent and intense. Until now the country had set itself climate targets based on the carbon intensity of its economic growth, meaning it set objectives to reduce its emissions per unit of wealth produced.

Zomato: fast delivery, faster investor reward
Zomato Ltd is known for its quick delivery, but investors in its shares seem equally fast or even faster in rewarding the online food delivery company’s financial performance. At least, that’s the impression one gets going by the 12% surge in the stock on Friday reacting to the positive surprises in the June quarter results (Q1FY25). This time around, the strong customer addition of the food delivery segment, which is already profitable at the adjusted Ebitda (excluding Esop) level, is commendable.
