Kanwar Yatra eateries row: TMC MP Mahua Moitra moves SC
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has moved the Supreme Court against the directives by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments that eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route must display the names of their owners. In her plea before the top court, Moitra has sought a stay on the orders passed by the two state governments saying such directives aggravate discord between communities. The plea is yet to be listed for hearing. The TMC leader said by forcing the disclosure of the names of proprietors and even those of their staff, on the stated ground of respecting pilgrims' dietary choices, «makes it clear that dietary choices is a pretext, or a proxy, for the compelled disclosure of personal — and, in this case, religious — identity», the plea said.

Controversial Kanwar Yatra order to echo in Parliament, Supreme Court; RLD joins chorus for withdrawal
Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners' names escalated as the BJP's ally RLD on Sunday joined the chorus for its withdrawal and the opposition parties stated they will raise the issue in Parliament. The issue has also reached the Supreme Court which is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea filed by an NGO — Association of Protection of Civil Rights — against the UP government order. Extensive arrangements have been made across several states for the Kanwar Yatra that starts on Monday with the beginning of the Sawan month of the Hindu calendar during which lakhs of Shiva devotees carry the holy water from the Ganges in Haridwar to their homes while offering it at Shiva temples on their way. The opposition has alleged that the order on eateries is «communal and divisive» and intended to target Muslims and Scheduled Castes by forcing them to reveal their identity. But the BJP maintained that the step has been taken keeping in mind law and order issues and the religious sentiments of pilgrims.

Cybersecurity: Microsoft’s Azure woes and Google’s acquisition moves
That cybersecurity and its failures can impact large parts of the world was evident on Friday, when Microsoft’s Azure outage—reported to be on account of CrowdStrike, Azure’s first line of cyber defence—left large numbers of computer users staring at blue screens that did not budge, preventing work. It brought airlines, media houses and banks (among others) to their knees in diverse markets, including India. So crucial is cybersecurity now in the tech world that Google’s parent Alphabet wants to acquire Wiz, a cybersecurity startup, as New York Times reported, even if that exposes it to antitrust scrutiny from regulators worldwide.

India trade talks set to be revived with first major UK ministerial visit
free trade agreement negotiations are set to be defined this week as UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy is expected in India on Tuesday, the first high-profile visit under the newly elected Labour government in Britain. The free trade agreement (FTA) talks began in January 2022, under the then Conservative government, with a target to significantly boost the GBP 38.1 billion a year bilateral trading partnership but hit a block in the fourteenth round of negotiations to make way for general elections in both countries. A report in 'The Daily Telegraph' on Sunday quotes a New Delhi source to claim the Indian side would seek clarity on whether the Labour government intends to pick things up from where they were left off or start afresh in some way. «India is keen to resume talks on a positive note, but the date needs clarity,» the source told the newspaper.

GERMANTOWN, Wis.—The Trump campaign’s effective takeover of the Republican National Committee has come with a new approach to on-the-ground canvassing efforts: doing more with less. The party says its get-out-the-vote effort, dubbed “Trump Force 47," is driven by a dedicated army of volunteers. It has been shrouded in secrecy since it launched earlier this year, raising questions in political circles about the ground-game strategy to support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Charting the global economy: UK services inflation tops forecast
inflation in its services sector last month, retail sales weakened and the budget deficit exceeded estimates — highlighting a host of challenges for UK policymakers. Money markets see about a 40% chance that the Bank of England will lower interest rates next month, as officials balance signs of a weakening labor market with stubborn price pressures. The European Central Bank, meanwhile, left interest rates unchanged after last month’s landmark cut. The ECB is weighing whether euro-zone inflation is cooling sufficiently to allow further monetary loosening.

Ujjain shop owners told to display names, contact numbers: not targeting Muslims, says mayor
BJP government in UP for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route. Violators will have to pay a Rs 2,000 fine for the first offence and Rs 5,000 if they defy this order for the second time, Ujjain Mayor Mukesh Tatwal said on Saturday. This order is aimed at ensuring safety and transparency and not intended to target Muslim shop-keepers, the mayor said. Ujjain, the hometown of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is known for its sacred Mahakal temple, attracting devotees from around the globe, especially during the Savaan month, which starts on Monday. Tatwal said the Mayor-in-Council of Ujjain had approved a proposal for shopkeepers to display their names on September 26, 2002, followed by the Corporation House, and subsequently sent it to the state government for objections and formalities. «All formalities have been already completed. The implementation was delayed as the nameplates were initially required to be of the same size and colour. Now, we have relaxed these terms. Displaying the names and mobile numbers of shopkeepers will suffice,» he told PTI over the phone.

Quick commerce changes the game: Retail Inc joins Q as India shops by the minute
Indians are buying daily necessities and fast-moving consumer goods more frequently and in larger numbers than a few years ago, with researchers and senior executives attributing this to a growing trend of consumers seeking instant gratification, fuelled by burgeoning quick commerce. Realising the consumer behaviour, mainstream retailers like Reliance Retail and Spencer’s Retail are focusing on online orders and reducing their delivery time. Ecommerce firm Amazon is trying to turn around orders faster, while rival Flipkart has introduced its own quick commerce service.

Houthi targets in western Yemen following a fatal drone attack by the rebel group in Tel Aviv the previous day. Understanding the Budget: A step-by-step guide for investors
Union Budget. This time, I want to talk about how to understand the Budget in a very simple way. A country’s Budget is nothing but the plan of how it will meet the expenses and arrange means to achieve them via income sources. A Budget is a financial statement that documents the government’s expected expenditure across all fields for the next year and matches it with the income or receipts expected from various sources.
