Startups Are Using AI to Predict Responses to Cancer Drugs
Biomedical startups are using artificial intelligence to predict the response patients will have to cancer treatments, aiming to increase the success of drugs in clinical trials and tailor therapies to individuals. As data accumulate from clinical trials and fields such as gene and protein research, AI is helping scientists sift through large volumes of information to uncover signatures that correlate with response—or resistance—to treatment. Startups are using it to predict which drugs are likely to work in clinical studies and create tests to help doctors choose treatments.

Indian banks strong enough to face adverse macro and credit stress: RBI
Perception of riskiness of the Indian banking system has improved in relation to the global financial system, but the contagion risk has risen due to a merger in the sector though it is not a cause of worry, the RBI said without naming HDFC and HDFC Bank that merged this year. «Macro stress tests for credit risk showed that SCBs (scheduled commercial banks) have sufficient capital buffers and even under adverse stress scenarios their capital ratios will remain above the regulatory minimum,» said the RBI's 28th Financial Stability Report. «Wider adoption of technology in the financial system amidst a new wave of innovations also poses new challenges for financial stability that would require suitable risk mitigating regulatory and supervisory actions.» Indian banks are making record profits with rising income from lending and sliding provisions for bad loans.

Liquidity issues can still hurt some NBFCs
asset-liability positions by trimming dependence on short-term borrowing and increasing preference for long-term funding sources, but in case of extreme liquidity conditions, 34 firms may face stress, the Reserve Bank of India said. «The results (of stress scenarios) indicate that the number of NBFCs, which would face negative cumulative mismatch in liquidity over the next one year in the baseline, medium and high-risk scenarios, stood at 6, 17 and 34, respectively,» the RBI said in its December 2023 Financial Stability Report. Under the RBI's stress scenario, six NBFCs represent 1.3% of the asset size of the sample, 17 non-bank firms represent 10.4% and 34 firms account for 15%, respectively. Based on five-year data, a study of the asset-liability management profile of the top 50 NBFCs showed that 76% of bonds issued by the non-bank lenders had a residual maturity of up to five years in September 2023, down from 88% in September 2018. This indicates elongation in the maturity of bonds, the RBI said.

How magicians control flip of a coin
Dynamical Bias in the Coin Toss, Persi Diaconis et al, SIAM Review, 2007) That is, if a coin is tails-up when flipped, it has a slightly higher chance of landing tails, rather than heads—0.51 to 0.49. Now this is so slightly higher that it makes no real difference on a single coin toss, like the one that starts off a tennis or cricket match. But instead, let’s say you have a bet with a friend that depends not on one, but a thousand tosses.

Three state-owned non-life insurers fail to meet solvency requirements: RBI report
The solvency ratio for public sector non-life insurers’ group is sub-optimal with three of the four PSU insurers recording the ratio below the baseline prescription, the RBI said in its report released on Thursday. The minimum solvency ratio requirement set by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) for insurance companies in India is 150 per cent. The higher the solvency ratio, the better will be the ability of the insurer to meet its liabilities The report also noted that the solvency ratio for life insurance companies has been above the prescribed threshold for both public sector and private sector at an aggregate level. In case of mutual funds, the regulator’s analysis revealed stress including credit risk, interest rate risk, and liquidity risk in the case of 17 mutual funds.
