Unified EC with Rajiv Kumar at the helm expected to take clear, strong calls
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar is at the wheel as India heads for the election to the 18th Lok Sabha, having already helmed seven assembly elections --from the high-voltage campaign in Karnataka and Telangana to the Naxal hotbed in Chhattisgarh and the polarised poll of Tripura. He is uniquely placed vis-a-vis his predecessors. As against the divided, dissenting house that went to Lok Sabha elections 2019 — split in the middle right into the final counting day — Kumar is now said to be backed by a unified Commission ahead of the 2024 LS polls.

Who's Harry Potter?," explores a groundbreaking technique that allows large language models to selectively forget information. Microsoft researchers Mark Russinovich and Ronen Eldan demonstrated that AI models can be modified to erase knowledge of the Harry Potter books—characters, plots, and all—while maintaining their overall decision-making and analytical abilities. The choice of Harry Potter was deliberate, as the series is universally familiar, making it easy for researchers to evaluate the effectiveness of the technique.

Deven Choksey on what PSU rally, UPL rights issue will mean for market
Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd, says: “The government has made most of the PSU companies more accountable for the growth. And that is one of the reasons for which the market participants and investors have started buying into some of the PSU companies because there is a visibility of growth that one is seeing vis-à-vis the private sector players I think these companies probably require to demonstrate their amount of growth. If that is so, then I would justify the kind of rally which is right now in place as far as the PSUs are concerned.” You have been a market watcher for the longest time. Do you think we have the infrastructure in place for T+0, instant settlement for the equity cash segment? What will the impact of this be like? Deven Choksey: In a lighter tone, I think in our country we first create the product and then the infrastructure gets built. I am not going to be very surprised if infrastructure is going to get built over a period of time. However, the most important part out here is that this particular move is likely to work for the investors much more significantly. When you settle the trade on the same day, you probably bring in a significant amount of market confidence and the integrity quotient will probably increase significantly. So, from that point of view, I would think that it is going to benefit the investors the most. Whether we have the requisite infrastructure at this point of time in place, it will have to be tested.

Insacog meet on Friday to take stock of rising Covid cases
Insacog — the network of laboratories set up to monitor genomic variations of the coronavirus in India — will hold a meeting on Friday. «By Friday, we will come to know about the expansion of the new sub-variant and the proportion of other existing sub variants,» said a member of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (Insacog) on the condition of anonymity. So far, 69 cases of JN.1 Covid variant cases have been reported in the country. India reported 116 new cases of Covid-19, with three deaths in Karnataka, bringing total active cases to 4,170 and the total death toll to 533,337, as of Tuesday. «The cases are expected to go up as testing has been ramped up too,» he said. While cases of newly detected sub-variant are surging, XBB continues to be dominant in India.
