Pentagon Eyes Microwave Weapons to Tackle Drone Threat
Pentagon planners worried about the increasing threat from drones have looked at everything from mesh nets and missiles to cannons and lasers, but now a once highly-classified technology is attracting more attention and funding. High-power microwave devices that can disrupt or even fry the electronics of aerial threats—such as drones and missiles—are moving to the forefront of defense strategies after years of development. In theory, microwave systems offer the ability to keep firing for as long as they have power, which could help take down a swarm of drones.

Explainer: US, Asian allies launch system to track North Korea missiles in real-time
South Korea, the United States and Japan said on Tuesday they have activated a new system to detect and assess North Korea's missile launches in real-time. The announcement comes after North Korea said it had tested the isolated state's newest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Monday to gauge the war readiness of its nuclear force against mounting U.S. hostility. Here is what we know about the new missile warning data sharing system: WHAT INFORMATION IS BEING SHARED? Under the new mechanism, the three countries will share information on the launch site, flight trajectory and hitting point of North Korean missiles around the clock, South Korean Defence Minister Shin Won-sik said. The United States had until now shared such information separately with South Korea and Japan. «We will have warning data on North Korean missiles much faster, and be able to secure enough time to respond effectively,» Shin said in an interview with broadcaster MBN on Monday.

Old-School Wind Power Is Back for Cargo Shipping
Could sails make a comeback for cargo ships on the high seas? Major players in maritime shipping, looking for ways to cut carbon emissions and save on fuel, are trying out new ways to use old-fashioned wind power. But the devices being tested on some bulk freighters are far from old-fashioned—more like high-tech airplane wings than the canvas sails that once powered schooners and sloops. One version is the “WindWings" device developed by the Minneapolis-based agricultural giant Cargill and BAR Technologies, a U.K.-based company that has designed boats and advanced sails for the America’s Cup race.
