An army chief, a college student and a law professor: The key people who will shape Bangladesh’s future
Bangladesh, an interim government is now in place to begin the difficult work of bringing stability and order to the South Asian nation. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will helm the temporary government made up of a team of 16 other advisers, including two leaders of the student-protest movement that swept the country in recent weeks. The inauguration of the temporary government on Thursday brought to an end a four-day power vacuum after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India following street protests that left hundreds dead.

For some, college degree at home is new study abroad
study abroad platforms including CollegeDekho, iSchoolConnect, Leverage.biz, Career Mosaic, among others told ET that Indian colleges have lately become safer bets or at least a back-up option for students considering international markets for education. The reasons: protests escalating into violence, political unrest, tighter visa policies, geo-political tensions and economic slowdown in many of the study abroad destinations for Indian students, said experts. Nations like Canada, Australia and the UK that are home to the bulk of Indian students have tightened visa policies leading to higher rates of rejection. Others like Russia, Ukraine, Bangladesh and even some regions in the UK and the US are grappling with either public unrest or geopolitical tensions, making them unattractive.

Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus condemns 'heinous' attacks on minorities, calls on youth for protection
Muhammad Yunus condemned recent attacks on minority communities in the country, calling them «heinous,» and called on the youth to protect Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist families. Speaking at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, Yunus urged students to ensure the safety of minorities and not let their efforts be undermined. These remarks come following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5, which led to at least 205 incidents of attacks on minority communities across 52 districts, according to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad. Thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus are attempting to flee to neighboring India to escape the violence. Yunus, addressing students who are leading protests, assured them that many were watching their efforts and encouraged persistence in their cause. «There are many standing by to make your efforts futile. Don't fail this time,» Yunus stated during his speech.

The secret behind US’s Once-in-a-Generation Weightlifter: Not Lifting Weights
PARIS—Ever since Team USA won its last Olympic weightlifting gold at the 2000 Sydney Games, a generation of Americans has tried and failed to outdo rivals in hoisting dangerously heavy pieces of metal above their heads. Now, nearly a quarter-century later, that drought looks set to end Friday via the chalked hands of a 21-year-old Tennesseean. After conquering an Olympic qualifier, Olivia Reeves enters the 157-pound division as the top-ranked lifter and gold-medal favorite.

Scientists propose warming up Mars by using heat-trapping 'glitter'
Mars into a world more hospitable to human habitation is a regular feature of science fiction. But could this be done in real life? Scientists are now proposing a new approach to warm up Earth's planetary neighbor by pumping engineered particles -similar in size to commercially available glitter and made of iron or aluminum — into the atmosphere as aerosols to trap escaping heat and scatter sunlight toward the Martian surface. The idea would be to augment the natural greenhouse effect on Mars to raise its surface temperature by roughly 50 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) over a span of a decade. This alone would not make Mars habitable for people, but the scientists who developed the proposal see it as a potentially doable initial step.

Fractional ownership platform Property Share gets maiden SEBI license for SM REIT
commercial real estate investment platform Property Share has received the Small and Medium Real Estate Investment Trust (SM REIT) license from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) under the newly notified SM REIT regulations. The fractional ownership platform (FOP) has received the capital market regulator’s approval under the name of Property Share Investment Trust (PSIT) and has become the first entity to secure the same. Property Share will become the investment manager to PSIT. “Any regulated product comes with significant benefits for investors like high-net-worth requirements for the investment manager, compliance and reporting standards, transparency, investor protection mechanisms, and marketing restrictions. We look forward to continue working closely with SEBI in launching the IPO of the first SM REIT scheme in the weeks to come,” said Kunal Moktan, co-founder of Property Share

Mohammad Yunus: A well-known critic of Sheikh Hasina now heads Bangladesh's interim govt
Professor Mohammad Yunus, a well-known critic of Sheikh Hasina and persecuted by her regime, when the Nobel laureate became the head of the caretaker government after she resigned and fled to India. The 84-year-old economist, globally recognised as 'The Father of Microfinance,' who flew down from Paris earlier in the day, was declared as the head of the interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin after dissolving Parliament Tuesday, a decision prompted by a demand by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Yunus had announced plans to form a political party in 2007 when the country was run by a military-backed government and criticised Bangladeshi politicians alleging they were only interested in money. He, however, did not follow through on that plan. By a quirk of fate, on Thursday he took oath to lead a non-partisan, non-military caretaker government.
