David Rosenberg: Bank of Canada is going to have to cut rates sooner and harder than the Fed
There were several items that came out of the fourth-quarter national balance sheet data in Canada that leave us with a view that any positive “wealth effect” on spending is subsiding, that households are hunkering down and sharply reducing their appetite for debt, and that the Bank of Canada is going to end up having to cut rates sooner and harder than the United States Federal Reserve, with negative repercussions for the listless loonie.

US business activity stable in March; inflation picks up
business activity held steady in March, but prices increased across the board, suggesting that inflation could remain elevated after picking up at the start of the year. S&P Global said on Thursday that its flash U.S. Composite PMI Output Index, which tracks the manufacturing and services sectors, dipped to 52.2 this month from 52.5 in February. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the private sector.

HSBC dispels fears of deeper correction in midcaps. Picks Nykaa, 7 more stocks as buys
midcap stocks hold potential to deliver decent growth. HSBC has identified 8 midcap stocks, which could give up to 58% returns. The Hong Kong-based brokerage argues why it considers them a safe bet. HSBC has dispelled fears of a deeper correction in midcaps from here, like what happened in 2018 when the BSE Midcap index fell by over 13%. It said many midcap stocks have even corrected 35-50% with valuations coming down to the 5-year mean. Moreover, the midcap market breadth has declined to 73% from 90%+ at the beginning of the year (versus 60% which is the normal cycle average breadth). This signals a limited downside.

Centre likely to notify MGNREGS wage revision, calls it 'routine' exercise
Rural Development Ministry may notify revision in wage rates under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and it has received a clearance from the Election Commission as the poll code is in force, sources said on Thursday. Though ministry officials refused to comment on the issue in view of the model code of conduct (MCC) being in place after the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll schedule, they said it is a «routine» matter and that ministries approach the EC for clearances when the model code is in place. According to a source, the changes in rates are to be notified for the upcoming financial year starting April 1. «It's the regular process of revision of rates every financial year from April 1. The ministry has taken permission from the EC for notifying it,» the source said.
