Not even far-flung Antarctica could escape the covid virus
Covid was not supposed to get to Antarctica. If any place had a hope of keeping the virus out, it would be a continent with no permanent residents and an annual visiting population of only 5,000. And every control measure was in place—testing, a strict quarantine of everyone visiting, deep sanitation, masks and social distancing.

Dengue risk re-evaluated: India research finds first infections can be as severe as secondary
dengue can be as life-threatening as the subsequent ones, according to a study which challenges the widely held belief that the viral disease is severe only in secondary infections. The research, published recently in the journal Nature Medicine, analysed severe dengue cases in a group of children in India, showing that more than half could be attributed to primary rather than secondary infection. Over the past two decades, dengue infections have greatly increased in India and the country has one of the largest number of cases globally. Dengue patients fall into two categories — those experiencing the infection for the first time, known as primary infections and those who get re-infected after a previous exposure, known as secondary infections.

Covid-19 cases rising again in India: Experts cite this reason and precautions
Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, marking the highest daily number since May last year. This increase in infections is not limited to Delhi alone, as other northern states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar are also experiencing a rise in cases. Over the past 15 days, Delhi has reported a total of 459 cases, compared to 191 in the previous two weeks and 73 in the 15-day period prior to that. Similarly, Rajasthan has seen an increase in cases, with 226 reported in the last 15 days compared to 96 and 27 in the previous two fortnights, according to data from the Union health ministry. Although the reported numbers may not be significant, experts believe that the actual count is likely much higher due to low testing rates. The last time Delhi reported more than 50 daily Covid cases was in May 2023, during the declining phase of a nationwide surge that began in March and peaked in mid-April, with over 12,500 cases reported on April 19.
