How IT companies in Bengaluru are preparing for the water crisis
Mallya emphasized the significant water requirement by tech hubs, estimating that even a tech hub with 5,000 employees would require approximately 1 lakh litres of water daily, equivalent to 10-12 tanker loads. He stressed the necessity for industries to adapt and problem-solve. While IT firms may not face immediate production cuts due to the nature of their work, Mallya noted that other industries are struggling to meet their commitments. He underscored the importance of honoring manufacturing obligations, citing examples such as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) supplying to the automobile sector, who cannot afford to use water shortage as an excuse for delays.

Covid-19 cases rising again in India: Experts cite this reason and precautions
Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, marking the highest daily number since May last year. This increase in infections is not limited to Delhi alone, as other northern states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar are also experiencing a rise in cases. Over the past 15 days, Delhi has reported a total of 459 cases, compared to 191 in the previous two weeks and 73 in the 15-day period prior to that. Similarly, Rajasthan has seen an increase in cases, with 226 reported in the last 15 days compared to 96 and 27 in the previous two fortnights, according to data from the Union health ministry. Although the reported numbers may not be significant, experts believe that the actual count is likely much higher due to low testing rates. The last time Delhi reported more than 50 daily Covid cases was in May 2023, during the declining phase of a nationwide surge that began in March and peaked in mid-April, with over 12,500 cases reported on April 19.

Bengaluru water crisis: Demand for Cauvery water on the rise as borewells run dry
“We are receiving the same input from the Cauvery that we have been getting. The water level in the basin is depleting, whereas demand in the city has increased without the borewell supplements,” officials at the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) said. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said that out of the city's 16,781 borewells, only 7,784 were currently operational, with 6,997 having dried up. The areas in the city’s tech belt, away from its centre, would be the most affected, said BWSSB officials. “These places have always used borewell water, never Cauvery, up until now,” they said.

Aid for women not 'revdi'; using taxes for welfare, says Atishi
Delhi government's new scheme, Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, which promises ₹1,000 per month to women above 18 years of age is not «revdi» (freebie) but a social welfare initiative aimed at empowering women and boosting economic liquidity, Delhi finance minister Atishi has said. Speaking to ET, Atishi said AAP government's schemes had been criticised as «revdi» by political opponents but the state government was utilising taxes paid by the people for their welfare. «If we can run the government in fiscal surplus and also give the citizens of Delhi everything (free electricity, water, healthcare and education), why shouldn't we? What is bothering the opponents so much? Atishi presented the Budget 2024-25 on Monday, announcing the programme for women over 18 who are not income-tax payers, have a government employment, or get a pension. According to Delhi government estimates, 45-50 lakh women out of 67 lakh women voters will be eligible under this initiative.
