BJP to extend cooperation in ensuring Bengaluru bandh is successful tomorrow: Yediyurappa
BJP leader B S Yediyurappa on Monday said his party would extend cooperation in ensuring that the Bengaluru bandh called by various organisations protesting against the release of Cauvery water is successful. He accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar of behaving like agents of Tamil Nadu for complying with orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority and the Cauvery Water Water Regulation Committee, which the Supreme Court refused to interfere with. The former chief minister said BJP's new alliance partner JD(S) too will support the bandh and take part in the protest organised by the party on September 27.

Bengaluru bandh to protest Cauvery water release to TN on Thursday, statewide shutdown on Friday
Tamil Nadu, two bandhs have been called this week — in Bengaluru tomorrow, and statewide on Friday. The announcement for the Karnataka bandh on September 29 was made on Monday, under the banner 'Kannada Okkuta' — led by Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj, days after the 'Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti', an umbrella outfit of farmers' associations and other organisations led by farmer leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar gave the call for Tuesday's Bengaluru shutdown. The two bandhs reflect the divide among the farmers and pro-Kannada organisations, and has also now led to a confusion about who is supporting the bandh on which day, and whether services will be available tomorrow. While Shanthakumar has said that they will go ahead with the Bengaluru bandh on Tuesday, Vatal Nagaraj, who has called for a state bandh on Friday, made it clear that Kannada Okkuta is not supporting tomorrow's bandh. Shanthakumar said they have received support from a number of organisations for their bandh call tomorrow and will go ahead with it. «We will come in a protest to Bengaluru's Freedom Park and stage a demonstration there with our demands. The state government, the chief minister, will have to receive our memorandum.

Cauvery Water Dispute: Deve Gowda urges PM Modi to set up external agency to study reservoirs in Cauvery basin
Deve Gowda on Monday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the Jal Shakti Ministry to appoint an external agency, independent of the states that are party to the dispute and the union government, to conduct studies of all reservoirs in the Cauvery basin. He also stressed the need to have an appropriate distress formula applicable to all the states concerned, in such distress conditions. Noting that due to the failure of the Southwest monsoon (from June to September) this year, there is insufficient storage in the identified/designated four reservoirs of Cauvery basin in Karnataka, he said the state is facing such a grave situation that it is finding it extremely difficult even to cater to the drinking water requirements, let alone for irrigation. The Janata Dal (S) supremo released a copy of the September 23 letter that he wrote to the Prime Minister on issues of 'resolving the ongoing disputes and differences between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the matter of releasing Cauvery waters from Karnataka reservoirs to Tamil Nadu,' at a press conference. Deve Gowda said that the combined storage available as of September 23 in all four reservoirs of Cauvery basin in Karnataka is only 51.10 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) whereas the requirement for standing crops and for drinking water is 112 TMC. «The attitude of Tamil Nadu in pressing for additional releases far in excess of 40 TMC already released so far is not only unjust but also against all principles of equity and natural justice, considering the fact that providing drinking water is a fundamental right under the Constitution and it gets the highest priority in the National Water Policy,» Gowda wrote in the letter. «To appoint an external agency,

Cauvery Issue: HD Deve Gowda gets emotional, says 'I'm alive not for politics or power'| WATCH
ANI, HD Devegowda said, “I request the Center to send a team to Karnataka and let them investigate the present water situation in the state...I'm alive not for politics or power. We are here to save the people of the state, my party exists for this." Gowda further noted, “I have made an appeal to the PM on the prevailing situation. In my letter to the PM, I wrote that the Jal Shakti department should file a review petition and a committee of experts should be sent to Karnataka to study the water and standing crop situation." The protestors demanded the sharing of Cauvery water to save the standing ‘kuruvai’ crop cultivation in Tamil Nadu.

MoSPI gears up for 80th national sample survey
national sample survey, people in the know told ET, amid an increasing focus on the quality of survey data. ET reported last month that the 79th round of the National Sample Survey was due to be completed this month, and that the results would likely be available by December-end. “Some of the indicators are likely to be repeated this year as well,” one of the people said. The 79th round of the survey, started in July last year, was termed a comprehensive annual modular survey to create a database of “high-frequency socioeconomic indicators”, which include those in line with sustainable development goals that are not captured by administrative statistics. The 79th survey asked questions on access to mobile phones, drinking water services, internet, computer and financial institutions, which the people said may be repeated in the next round as well. The 79th round also included the first comprehensive survey on Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) to gauge awareness and penetration of the Ayush systems besides the expenditure incurred on treatments. The new round will likely include a comprehensive survey suggested by a different ministry. Some of the ministries have already made requests. The survey will have to be approved by the newly reconstituted Standing Committee on Statistics.

Cauvery water row: A united BJP-JDS makes it tougher for Congress
Congress government in Karnataka on a back foot. Cauvery: Pro-Kannada, farmer outfits call for Bengaluru bandh on Tuesday
pro-Kannada and farmer outfits have called for a Bengaluru bandh on Tuesday (Sep 26) to protest orders to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Normal life is expected to be disrupted on Tuesday as the Opposition BJP and JDS have pledged support to the bandh call, while the ruling Congress party's resistance seems only symbolic. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has already said protests were part and parcel of democracy and the government would not try to stop them. Some trader organisations have also expressed their support. There were efforts by a section of Kannada outfits to drop Tuesday’s bandh, and instead go for a state-wide bandh on Sep 29 (Friday), but majority of farmer outfits have stuck to their Tuesday’s bandh call.
