Rice, cane lift acreage of kharif sowing past 2022 level
Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics.“Farmers this kharif are expected to witness a decline in yields across key crops like paddy, cotton, maize and pulses. Considering the sowing and yield situation and market conditions, we expect paddy prices to remain elevated on-year, whereas pulse prices are expected to rise significantly on a high base due to anticipated lower output on year," Sharma said. The sowing of coarse cereals went up 2.3% year-on-year to 18.6 mh.

Respect for sovereignty & territorial integrity underpin development of Indo-Pacific, say Quad foreign ministers
sovereignty and territorial integrity underpin the development of the Indo-Pacific region and expressed serious concern on the militarisation of disputed features, the dangerous use of coast guard and maritime militia vessels, and efforts to disrupt other countries' offshore exploitation activities. The Quad or the Quadrilateral coalition is a plurilateral framework comprising India, Australia, Japan and the US formed in 2017 to counter China's aggressive behaviour in the Indo-Pacific region. Foreign ministers of the four-nation bloc — External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko — met on the margins of the high-level 78th session of the UN General Assembly for the Quad Foreign Ministers' meeting and reaffirmed their commitment to uphold the principles of the UN Charter. «We reaffirm our conviction that international law, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the maintenance of peace and security in the maritime domain underpin the development and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific,» a joint readout of the Quad Foreign Ministers' meeting said. The ministers emphasised that disputes should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law, without threat or use of force. «We emphasise the importance of adherence to international law, particularly as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to address challenges to the global maritime rules-based order, including with respect to maritime claims, and in the South and East China Seas,» they said in the joint statement. The ministers emphasised the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and

China, India lead Asia's biggest hydropower crunch in decades
Hydropower generation in Asia has plunged at the fastest rate in decades amid sharp declines in China and India, data shows, forcing power regulators battling volatile electricity demand and erratic weather to rely more on fossil fuels. The two countries, which account for about 3/4 of Asia's power generation and most of its emissions, are also to a lesser extent using renewables to make up for the hydropower shortfall and address rising electricity use. Major Asian economies have faced power shortages in recent years due to extreme weather conditions, including intense heat and lower rainfall over large swathes of northern China and Vietnam, as well as in India's east and the north. Higher use of polluting fuels such as coal to meet electricity demand spikes and supply shortages underscore the challenges of lowering emissions.

AI Complicates Sustainability Profiles of Tech Companies — ESG Insight
• Training AI-powered models requires high levels of energy and water consumption, but they can also be used to help offset greenhouse-gas emissions and control water consumption by making systems more efficient • Energy management and water-and-wastewater management aren’t considered financially material for the technology and communications sector, although it contains most AI-focused companies • Among the 10 largest companies in the Wisdom Tree Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Index, Microsoft and Alphabet lead in energy management, while Nvidia, Meta Platforms and Microsoft are among the leaders for water-and-wastewater management, Dow Jones sustainability data shows The increasing development and implementation of artificial intelligence by businesses has both positive and negative sustainability implications for companies, specifically those in the technology and communications sector. Training AI-powered models, such as the one behind ChatGPT, requires significant levels of energy and water consumption, as data centers use large amounts of water for cooling.

Green hydrogen or a Carbon Bomb?: Why the new definition is making industry, climate activists see red
green hydrogen (GH2) making the industry and climate activists see red? As industrial use cases rise, the attempt to create an enabling environment to cater to a wider domestic eco-system while simultaneously aiming for a major chunk of global exports of the green gas through some standardisation is a logical first step. But continuing to depend on the paradox that fossil fuels, mainly coal, will fire our green revolution is hardly a forward leap by the world’s 3rd largest emitter of carbon dioxide. Without plugging the key gaps and relying on simplistic assumptions, the new definition will fail the very purpose of reduction of greenhouse emissions that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is aiming to achieve in the first place. In India, for hydrogen — that is produced through the electrolyser process by splitting water into hydrogen and carbon dioxide — to be certified green, it now needs to have emissions of under 2 kg of carbon dioxide for every kg of hydrogen produced, but the emissions will be measured over a 12 month average.

World Bank’s IFC, Sunteck form platform for green urban housing, to invest Rs 750 cr
India, the World Bank member IFC and realty developer Sunteck Realty are partnering to create a joint platform to promote the development of 12,000 housing units with a total investment of up to Rs 750 crore. These houses will be developed across four to six green housing projects within the country’s commercial capital Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Of the total investment into this joint platform, IFC's proposed investment will be up to Rs 330 crore with the remainder to be brought in by Sunteck Realty. «This investment aligns with our strategy to create more inclusive and equitable cities by backing affordable and eco-friendly housing through partnerships with established companies like Sunteck Realty,” said Wendy Werner, IFC Country Head, India. According to him, it also supports the government of India's 'Housing for All' initiative, delivering essential societal benefits including shelter, safety, job opportunities, wealth generation, and enhanced credit access. »We are pleased to collaborate with IFC in our shared goal of addressing the housing shortage in India. Our wide range of offerings provide high quality amenities and enhanced lifestyle for all the segments of the population,” said Kamal Khetan, CMD, Sunteck Realty. According to Khetan, this strategic partnership demonstrates the company's capability to develop high quality large-scale housing projects in the MMR and aligns with its vision of sustainable and green housing solutions. With a population exceeding 2.2 crore, the Mumbai region is India's largest and most active housing market, grappling with a significant housing deficit.

Climate finance must get beyond greenwishing and greenwashing
climate change already wreaking havoc on poor and rich countries alike, unlocking this largely untapped pool of capital has become an urgent priority. Yet, as matters stand, many investors associate climate-centric investments with ‘social impact’ and reduced profitability. While sophisticated investors have the means to deploy their capital profitably toward decarbonization, the energy transition and other climate-related sectors, such investments tend to be illiquid.
