Akhil Chaturvedi on how SIPs and lump sums are shaping India's investment landscape
«So, all of this on the back of a lot of optimism, great returns from the market, a lot of optimism from the investors who continue to come into the markets through essentially mutual funds and other platforms, I think it is still the tip of the iceberg,» says Akhil Chaturvedi, CBO & ED, MO AMC. Congratulations, what a proud moment. You have managed to surpass that Rs 1 lakh crore mark when it comes to your AUMs. Tell me, given that one has seen a big move in the equity markets in the last decade, but we are still scratching the surface and the penetration levels still are not that deep. What is it that we could look at in terms of visibility for your AUMs in the next sayd four to five years or even ten years hence? Akhil Chaturvedi: Thank you so much. Yes, it is indeed a big milestone we have crossed at a lakh crore. It has been quite a journey. I think over the last 10 years literally we were at Rs 2,000 crores. From there, crossing a lakh crores is almost 50 times growth. It is all credit to the way our economy is doing and the same is reflecting in the capital markets.

Central bank rate cuts: Ask why instead of when and to what extent
The focus of market players and borrowers has turned towards monetary policy in the US, particularly the two questions of when and by how much will its central bank, the Federal Reserve, cut the US Fed funds rate. Anticipation of imminent cuts rose after the Jackson Hole huddle of central bankers and economists, an occasion that market participants across the world were watching for cues.

Paytm cue: Adhere to stock option rules in both letter and spirit
The shares of Paytm’s owner One97 Communications tumbled by almost 10% in intraday trading on Monday. The company rushed to clarify that it wasn’t under fresh regulatory scrutiny, but the payments platform had only the dismal optics of its own past actions to blame for taut nerves among investors. Although One97 has denied having received a new show-cause notice from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), its 2021 issuance of employee stock options to founder-CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma continues to haunt it, evidently.

Stock picking: 3 factors that are driving Rahul Rathi’s investment strategy
Rahul Rathi, Chairman & Fund Manager, Purnartha PMS, says in their investment strategy, the first driver is volume growth; the second driver is operating margin expansion and the third driver is valuation. They picked up GAIL last year at Rs 110, margins were at 1% compared to historical margins of 13% to 15% and they knew that margin contraction was temporary. Valuations were lower. It was a largecap and they rode its benefit. They are riding the benefit of a similar thought process in Tech Mahindra. It is a bottoms-up strategy and instead of one driver and the environment where interest rates came down, the focus is on three drivers. How are the markets looking? Where are you picking your spots? Rahul Rathi: Let us look at the background and then I will tell you how things have changed. Over the last 15 years delivering returns, we have always believed that good companies with large volume growth meant a certain value-addition and asset appreciation could happen to the portfolio. We believed in businesses that had a certain volume growth, which was about 10% and which did not borrow money.

Assam CM Sarma says won't let Miya Muslims take over the state
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the state assembly that he would not let Miya Muslims (Bengali-speaking Muslims) take over the state, triggering protests from the Congress which staged a walkout. These remarks come at a time when several organisations in Upper Assam have threated Muslims to leave the region following the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl by three persons in Assam's Nagaon district. Speaking in the assembly on the Opposition's adjournment motion on several key issues, including rape of minors and the targeting of Muslims in Upper Assam's Sivasagar district, Sarma said, «I will take sides. What can you do? Will not let Miya Muslims take over Assam...Let them (the Opposition) compete for minority votes. I am not in the competition.» Harping on Opposition leaders Rafikul Sahab and Debabrata Saikia stating that Miya Muslims will move from Lower Assam, where they are present in significant numbers, to Upper Assam, Sarma said: «They have made an important statement… You Miya Muslims will take the entire lower Assam? We will not let you all take Upper Assam, not ever.»

Denied visa, Pakistan's sports body lodges complaint
Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association has lodged a formal complaint with the sport's world governing body and the organisers after their squad was denied visas by the Indian High Commission for the IBSF U-18 and U-21 World Championships, which began in Bengaluru on Saturday. A top official of the PBSA said that they couldn't secure visas for their three players, Ahsan Ramazan, Hasnain Akhtar and Hamza Illyas. «We had applied to the Indian High Commission on time after getting all NOCs from our government and Pakistan Sports Board. But they didn't issue visas due to which our squad could not travel to Bengaluru,» Alamgir Sheikh said. He said the three players had recently done very well for Pakistan and had very good chances of doing well in the world events but were deprived of an opportunity.
