Temple Bar's chair Richard Wyatt said the results reflect «strong stock selection» in market conditions that have been «supportive» of the portfolio managers' value investing approach. The outperformance enjoyed by the trust came on the back of solid gains made by its positions in NatWest Group, Barclays, ITV and Anglo American, as well as in the Dutch insurer NN Group, with all...

From Hindustani at Heathrow to Edinburgh's vanilla ice cream—a tale of discovery
Arranged Marriage, he said in an interview that he had always thought that Punjabi was India’s first language, until he landed in India and found out otherwise. Now, something opposite happened to me when I landed at the Heathrow Airport in London in July, knowing fully well that English was the first language of the people living in the United Kingdom. But the only language I could hear around me at Heathrow was Hindustani—the lingua franca of the people of North India and Pakistan.

India's inflation targeting: Base it on reality and not perceptions
Recently, writing in the Economic Survey, the chief economic advisor observed that it is worth exploring whether India’s inflation targeting regime should focus on non-food inflation. The reasoning was that monetary policy is more effective in counteracting price pressures that arise out of excess aggregate demand, whereas food inflation is usually on account of supply constraints. In contrast, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor recently spoke after the monetary policy meeting and observed that food inflation is a major factor in determining inflationary expectations and therefore continues to be a matter of concern.

Modernizing ships to maintain our position in international market: G Sivakumar, GE Shipping
«It is good if this can come up and with a good network of ports and connectivity. We are there to meet that requirement if it comes up. Second, your question was on where do we buy our ships from? We buy our ships in the second-hand market. We do not issue equity as a company and we have strict balance sheet criteria with regard to how much debt we take,» says G Sivakumar, ED & CFO, GE Shipping. I want to talk about your recently sold that older MR product tanker and took delivery of comparatively younger MR product tanker as well. Tell me, what kind of efficiencies does it really bring on the table for you with regards to financials? Also, are you anticipating any further changes in your fleet? G Sivakumar: Yes, we have been doing these transactions now for the last nine months. We have already sold out four ships, which are among the older vessels, and we have replaced them with slightly more modern ships of the same kind. This is twofold.

OMCs well placed as there is growth potential in new avenues and a surety of existing cash: MK Surana
MK Surana, Former CMD, HPCL, says crude below $80 and the cracks at $13 for HSD and $11 for MS, make OMCs well placed on overall setup. Also, many of these OMCs are going on a new path. OMCs are in a stage where there is a growth potential with a surety of the existing cash. Of course, the overhangs on the pricing part continue to be there, the possibility or not possibility of some interventions. Pure EV play may take some more time and the hybrid may be more common in the near future to come and that augurs well for the OMCs. How do you see the outlook for oil marketing companies? On the one hand, Brent is continuously under check, under $80 now and on the other hand, these OMCs are transforming beyond just being distributors of traditional fuel as well. MK Surana: The stage looks good as of today because the crude is below the psychological mark of $80. The global demand weakness as per many of the agencies who forecast is getting moderated from all the three agencies who have been doing IEA, EIA, or OPEC. The Indian demand is good on the overall while the global demand is lower. People have started recognising the weaknesses in China's demand growing in the current phase.

Over $50 bps rate cut to cause panic; gold may surge to $3,000: Santosh Rao
Santosh Rao, Head of Research, Manhattan Venture Partners, says more than 50 basis points rate cut by Fed would cause panic. It means the economy is deteriorating and they do not want that to happen. As long as they keep cutting rates, 25 bps, gold will be steady. But if they cut a lot, gold will go spike much higher. $3000 is in the bag at that point. What do you make of gold at $2,500? We understand that investors are looking at the Fed's rate cut decision to major escalations in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but to what extent do geopolitical tensions drive these prices, and for how long will gold remain at these elevated levels? Santosh Rao: There is a fundamental shift in the way investors are looking at gold. It was a safe-haven trade in the past, but now it has become a big part of a diversified portfolio. It does move with the stock market, but not one-to-one correlation. When the stock market fell recently in the US, gold fell as well, but not as much. So, it outperformed the broader indexes.
