More Indian firms on US short-sellers' target? What they can do
Hindenburg Research's second attack on the Adani Group in which it targeted Sebi chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch has failed to make much impact on the markets. Hindenburg has claimed that she and her husband had stakes in offshore entities linked to the Adani family. Unlike its first report against the Adani Group in January last year, this one has failed to have intended impact so far. Adani stocks did not suffer the kind of rout they did in the wake of last year's report. Analysts have dismissed the report as «sensationalism» and say that it will not have much impact on stock prices.«It appears that this “revelation” is unlikely to impact the market meaningfully. The buy on-dips strategy which has been working well in this bull run is likely to work again,» said Dr. V K Vijayakumar of Geojit Financial Services. However, Hindenburg has doubled down on its claims and responded to Sebi chief's statement that accused the short-seller of attempting a «character assassination». Even though Indian markets as well as analysts have discounted the latest Hindenburg report and the short-seller has itself come under fire after Sebi's show-cause notice to it in June, short-seller attacks constitute a high risk for Indian companies.

Focus on cycles, not structural trends; better opportunities in 4 sectors: Anish Tawakley
Anish Tawakley, Deputy CIO-Equity, ICICI Prudential AMC, says he focuses more on cycles than on big 10-year structural trends. On a 10-year structural trend, one has to be in the right company because even if you look at the retailing example, it is a 10-year, 20-year trend, but it is not as if every company has done well. There are better opportunities in automobiles, capital goods, cement, and real estate because that is a sector that could still produce earnings surprises. Tawakley also says that we are still in an upcycle at the moment economically. We will reach the peak of this cycle when power capacity utilisation peaks. Let us start with your market view risk versus reward, how would you map the current market setup for our viewers? Anish Tawakley: At this point, the earnings outlook is reasonably good given that the economy is in good health. The market valuations are not cheap. So, anybody coming into the market should be coming in with at least a three-year view. One should not be coming in for very short-term gains. But the economic outlook is very healthy and the earnings outlook is also reasonably robust.

«Our maps feature 3D junction views and many other attributes that are hard to replicate or compete with. Of course, people will try, and everyone is welcome to compete fairly, but it is quite challenging.,» says Rohan Verma, CEO & MD, MapMyIndia. Before discussing the earnings and other details, I wanted to get a sense from you about the competition, as you’ve been quite vocal about it. Ola is also a listed player, so I'm trying to understand better what unique selling proposition (USP) you offer and what the moat is for companies trying to catch up in this technology. Rohan Verma: Mapping is a serious business and building it is not at all easy.

Excise policy case: Delhi CM Kejriwal challenges his arrest by CBI in SC, moves bail plea
Arvind Kejriwal has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the excise policy case and has also filed a bail plea. The Delhi High Court had earlier dismissed his petition challenging the arrest and advised him to seek bail from the trial court. While dismissing Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest, the HC stated that the prosecution has explained that, respecting his position as Chief Minister of NCT of Delhi, the police treaded with trepidation and caution and proceeded to collect the evidence from other persons suspected to be the accused. Consequently, extensive investigations were carried out across India to ascertain the entire web of conspiracy involving numerous persons. In his plea to the Delhi HC, CM Kejriwal stated that he is the National Convenor of a National Political Party (Aam Aadmi Party) and the sitting Chief Minister of Delhi, who is being subjected to «gross persecution and harassment for wholly malafide and extraneous considerations.»

More Japanese interest rate hikes may make yen borrowing unattractive: Experts
Mint. While the latest rate hike may not deter Indian corporates from borrowing from Japan, further rate hikes could force them to reconsider their plans. Last week, the Bank of Japan raised its interest rate for the second time in 17 years in another step away from its long-standing ultra-loose monetary policies, setting an interest rate of 0.25%, up from 0-0.1%.

Investment planning for children: How to choose the right investment option to secure your child's future
While Joshi started early, the vehicle he chose to reach his destination was not quite appropriate. He bought a traditional life insurance policy to save for his son’s education. For an annual premium of Rs.80,000, the policy covers him for Rs. 8 lakh and will start annual payouts when Swaraj turns 16. The returns work out to less than 6%. “Traditional insurance policies are not the best investment. They usually offer very low returns,” says Rohit Shah, Founder and CEO of GYR Financial Planners. Choosing the wrong investment is a common problem. It becomes even more acute while saving for critical long-term financial goals such as children’s education and weddings. Going for the wrong investment option could leave you with a shortfall in the target amount and jeopardise your planning. A study by financial planning firm, Finsafe India, shows that one out of three investors do not know where to invest. “This indicates a strong need for better financial education and investment guidance,” says Mrin Agarwal, Founder and CEO, Finsafe India.

Two steps to compassion
Compassion is a sublime virtue and meditative practice. Compassion distinguishes itself from loving kindness because it extends beyond feelings of warmheartedness and goodwill toward others. It is the process of permitting ourselves to be profoundly affected by the pain and vulnerability that all living things share.
