BJP's Kamlesh Shah on Saturday won the bypoll to Amarwara (ST) assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh by a margin of 3,027 votes, defeating his nearest Congress rival Dheeran Shah Invati in a close contest after 21 rounds of counting. Shah polled 83,105 votes while Invati garnered 80,078 votes, a poll official said. This is after 16 years that the BJP has won the Amarwara constituency after BJP's Premnarayan Thakur had trounced GGP's Manmohan Shah Bhati in 2008 by a thin margin of 437 votes. Incidentally, Thakur, like Kamlesh Shah, was also a Congress turncoat.

Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress on Saturday said it can only mean that full-fledged statehood for J&K is unlikely in the immediate future. The Centre has increased the remit of J-K LG on matters related to decisions on police, officers of all-India services such as the IAS and the IPS, and sanctioning prosecution in various cases. The powers were given to the LG by the Union home ministry on Friday through an amendment to the rules issued under the Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which was enacted for the bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while abrogating Article 370. In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, «The only meaning that can be drawn from this notification is that full-fledged statehood for J&K does not seem likely in the immediate future.»

HDFC Bank informed exchanges on Thursday. The country’s largest private bank said that the figures for the period ended June 30, 2024 and March 31, 2024 included the operations of the former HDFC Limited and hence were not comparable with those of the corresponding period of the previous year. In the first quarter of the current fiscal year, HDFC Bank’s retail loans grew by around Rs 18,600 crore, commercial and rural banking loans grew by Rs 7200 crore while corporate and other wholesale loans declined by Rs 26,600 crore, the lender said.

Boeing has started certification flight testing of its long-delayed 777-9 with U.S. aviation regulators onboard, the U.S. planemaker said in an emailed statement. revenue secretary Sanjay Malhotra will initiate the process of selection and appointment of judicial and technical members for the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) after the presentation of the budget, officials said. The central government is aiming to make the tribunal functional by the end of November and has already initiated the process of shifting anti-profiteering cases to the GSTAT principal bench from the Competition Commission of India (CCI). «We are putting all efforts to make the principal bench operational by the end of November and the process of selection and appointment will start immediately after the budget,» a senior government official told ET. Separately, a technical team is working on a dedicated online portal for electronic filing of appeals, officials said, adding that the portal will be ready by September.

Maharashtra legislative assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, on Tuesday said a GST department official posted in Gujarat has purchased 640 acres land in environmentally sensitive region in Satara district, and alleged that all rules have been violated in the process. Speaking in the Lower House of the state legislature during a debate on the budgetary demands, he said the land concerned is located in Kandati Valley in Satara. «A Gujarat Goods and Services Tax (GST) department official has purchased 640 acres of land in Satara. All rules have been violated in the purchase of the land. Roads have been constructed on the forest land and no permission has been sought from the revenue department before the digging work on the land under its jurisdiction. This has resulted in loss to the revenue department,» he said.

armed forces and infiltrators on Tuesday afternoon in a remote forest area of Doda in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said the exchange of fire took place during a cordon and search operation in Ghadi Bhagwah forest, following a tipoff regarding the movement of infiltrators in the area. «Two to three infiltrators were present in the area and heavy firing was going on in the area till late evening,» an official said. This is the third incident of violence in Jammu division in the last three days. Earlier, five armymen, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed and five others injured in Kathua district, while an armyman was injured on Sunday in Rajouri district. Following the attack on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road near Badnota village, a massive search operation was underway in the area which is along the border, around 150 km from the main Kathua town. Top brass of the J&K police visited the area and held a security review meeting. The joint search operation teams of the Army, police and CRPF were assisted by drone surveillance and elite para commandos. Sniffer dogs have been deployed in the area to look for infiltrators in the thick forest region. A team of the National Investigation Agency officials have also reached the spot where the incident happened and started its probe into the matter.

Titan Ltd registered 9% year-on-year growth in its business for the first quarter ended June 2024. The company had added a total of 61 stores during the reporting period, taking the company's total retail presence to 3,096 stores. Segment wise, jewellery domestic operations rose 8% year-on-year. Cargo traffic across 12 major Indian ports rose 6.8 per cent to 69.08 million tonnes (MT) in June from 64.69 MT in the year-ago month, with ten ports showing positive growth while the remaining two witnessed a decline. Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra recorded the highest growth in cargo handling at 15.12 per cent during the reporting month, followed by Cochin Port with 15.12 per cent, Kamarajar Port (10.70 per cent), Deendayal Port (8.57 per cent) and New Mangalore Port (8.53 per cent), according to the data released by the major ports' apex body Indian Ports Association (IPA). The 12 major ports are Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore (Kamarajar), Tuticorin (V O Chidambaranar), Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. According to the IPA, VO Chidambaranar Port's cargo traffic grew 7.73 per cent and Paradip Port 7.41 per cent growth, respectively, during the previous month.

Now, we have another disturbing fact to reckon with. The Hindu reports that in the April-June quarter of this 2023/24 fiscal year, fresh investments announced by corporates is just Rs. 44,000 crore. This is a 20-year low,» Ramesh said in a post on X. «Compare the decade of Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister with that of the non-biological PM. Investment as percentage of GDP (average over time) was 33.4% during the UPA and 28.7% in the Anyay-kaal,» he said.
