Odisha on Wednesday effected a major reshuffle among senior-level IAS officers. According to a notification issued by the state General Administration and Public Grievances (GA-PG) department for this purpose, Nikunja Bihari Dhal, the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) to the chief minister, will continue to have additional charge of chairman of IDCO, a state PSU. Similarly, ACS Surendra Kumar has been given the charge of the parliamentary affairs department in addition to the current posting as ACS to the GA-PG department and Tourism department. Voronezh region, near the two countries' shared border, Russian and Ukrainian officials said Sunday. «Several drones were detected and destroyed overnight by air defence systems above the Voronezh region,» regional governor Alexander Gusev wrote on Telegram. «Their falling debris set off a fire in a depot» in the Podgorensky district, about 80 km from the Ukrainian borderm. «Explosives began to detonate», Gusev said, adding that there were no indications anybody had been hurt. Rescue teams were at the scene and Gusev said local people living near the depot were being evacuated.

Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) on Wednesday directed Religare Enterprises (REL) to apply with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for the open offer made by the Burman family to raise its stake in the company. The tribunal, which hears appeals against the Sebi orders, however, stayed the show cause notice issued by the capital markets regulator to the financial services company and its board. In June, Sebi had asked Religare to apply with it the open offer proposal by the Burman family to purchase an additional 26% stake from the firm's public shareholders. Religare approached SAT against the Sebi directive.

Budget session, TMC MP Derek O'Brien said on Saturday, reiterating the opposition's demand to appoint one of its members as the Lok Sabha deputy speaker. Delhi High Court has directed social media platforms like Meta (Facebook), Telegram, and WhatsApp, along with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), to take down accounts and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) identities misusing digital payments platform Razorpay’s trademark to carry out fraudulent activities. Banks have also been instructed to freeze or suspend the operations of the bank accounts used by the fraudsters.

Coaches of an express train running between Nashik district and Mumbai got uncoupled at Kasara in neighbouring Thane on Saturday morning, in which no passenger was hurt, a railway official said. The train resumed its journey after 40 minutes when the coaches were re-attached, he said. The Panchavati Express train that began its journey from Manmad junction in Nashik district and was on its way to Mumbai, got uncoupled at Kasara railway station, about 128 km from Mumbai, Central Railway's chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila said. The incident occurred when the train was moving out of the Kasara station around 8.40 am, he said. «The train was uncoupled between coach number four and five. We will check why the coaches got uncoupled,» he said.

government is considering the option of handing over operations of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) to BSNL through an agreement, instead of pursuing a merger route, a source privy to the development said. A final call on this is likely to be taken in a month's time. The source said the option of handing over debt-laden MTNL's operations to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) through an agreement is being looked into. The source said that given MTNL's high debt, a merger with BSNL was not a favourable option. Once the decision is taken, the proposal would be placed before the Committee of Secretaries, and thereafter taken to the Cabinet.

petroleum products rose 2.6% year-on-year in June, helped by growth in petrol and jet fuel. Petrol sales grew 4.6% on-year in June while diesel sales expanded only 1%, according to the oil ministry data. Diesel accounts for 40% of the sales volume of petroleum products in the country. Petrol makes up 17% while LPG accounts for 12%. LPG, used mostly as cooking gas in the country, grew 3.2% in sales in June. Jet fuel consumption grew 10%, helped by a rise in holiday travel in June. Sales of bitumen, used mainly in building roads, grew 4.2% while the use of polluting petcoke rose 2%. Petrol sales were helped by strong new vehicle sales and increased holiday travel. Diesel is used mainly in long-haul transport, mining, irrigation, and backup generators.

bypolls held in four assembly seats in West Bengal began on Saturday, amid tight security arrangements, an Election Commission official said. The counting of votes commenced at 8 am. «We have made adequate security arrangements in and around the counting centres. Apart from the state police, central forces are also deployed,» the official told PTI. The bypolls for Maniktala, Bagdah, Ranaghat Dakshin and Raiganj assembly seats were held on July 10.

Budget 2024: Looking to fast-track hydropower capacity creation, the upcoming budget could unveil funding support to north-eastern states for purchasing equity in hydropower projects, said people familiar with the matter. The Centre could support equity participation by state governments in hydropower projects in the northeast at 24% of the total project equity, subject to a cap of Rs 750 crore per project initially, they said. “A new scheme focused on northeast is under consideration,” said one of the persons, who did not wish to be identified, adding the move was part of the government’s clean energy focus. North-eastern states that wish to have a joint venture for such projects are likely to be given financial assistance for their stake, said another person.

Britain's new government is prioritising avoiding job losses in talks with Tata Steel over government backing for a transition to lower-carbon technologies, business minister Jonathan Reynolds said on Sunday. Tata, Britain's biggest steel producer, started closing one of its carbon-intensive blast furnaces on Thursday while the shutdown of its other one is slated for September, resulting in the loss of up to 2,800 jobs at Port Talbot in South Wales. The new government will need to sign the 500 million pound ($635 million) support package the previous government agreed with Tata Steel to help build a lower-carbon electric arc furnace, but unions are hoping for an improved deal with Tata, which could prevent some job losses.
