coal production rose by 14.49 per cent to 84.63 million tonne (MT) in June. The country's coal output was 73.92 MT in June last fiscal, according to provisional figures of the government. In June Coal India Ltd's (CIL) production was at 63.10 MT, registering a rise of 8.87 per cent compared to the same period last year, the coal ministry said in a statement.

ESAF Small Finance Bank on Monday absorbed about 5,200 employees from ESAF Swasraya Multi-State Agro Co-operative Society Ltd (ESMACO), a corporate business correspondent of the bank, as part of a strategic business restructuring. The bank will now directly manage the microloan portfolio that was previously managed by ESMACO through banking outlets. This move aims to mitigate concentration risks while allowing ESMACO, a promoter group entity of the bank, to continue managing business operations at the Customer Service Centers. The micro banking vertical, created with a 5,197-strong workforce, will primarily serve the needs of the rural population through micro-loans, agriculture loans, vehicle loans, and home loans, ESAF Small Finance Bank Managing Director K Paul Thomas said. The bank is also designing liability products to suit the needs of low and middle-income savers, he added.

bridge collapse came to the fore in Bihar on Thursday, making it the 10th such incident to have been reported from the state in just over a fortnight, an official said. The latest incident was reported from Saran which witnessed two more bridge collapses in the last 24 hours, District Magistrate Aman Samir said. No casualty was reported after the structure, built 15 years ago by local authorities, collapsed this morning, he said. The small bridge over the Gandaki river was situated in the Baneyapur block and used to connect several villages in Saran with the neighbouring Siwan district.

India is considering setting up an underwater biodiversity research lab to study the different kinds of flora and fauna on the seabed, and at varying depths, to explore their potential for human consumption. The lab, part of the government's long-term vision of making India a developed nation by 2047, is being conceptualized under the Deep Ocean Mission and will be set up in the Indian Ocean. It seeks to make India a transnational and regional hub for marine biology and biotechnology research. A senior government official told ET that the underwater lab will be technologically one of the most advanced and will be used for exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity. «The proposal is at a concept stage and several rounds of deliberation between key stakeholders will be held before it gets onto the drawing board,» the official quoted above said.

Karni Sena in Rajasthan's Jaipur escalated into a violent altercation on Friday. The altercation broke out between Shiv Singh Shekhawat, national president of the Rashtriya Karni Sena, and Mahipal Singh Makrana, the leader of Rajput Karni Sena, at Chitrakoot area, police said. The confrontation reportedly involved an assault, with Makrana alleging that he was attacked with the butt of a gun, they said. According to officials, Makrana was allegedly attacked with the butt of a gun by Shekhawat's gunman. Both factions have accused each other of firing, but there has been no confirmation of a shootout.

Army personnel was injured when terrorists opened fire on a security post in a village in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir early Sunday, officials said. A working group headed by former RBI executive director G Padmanabhan has discussed various proposals including limiting weekly options, increasing lot sizes of F&O contracts, enhancing margin requirements, upfront collection of option premium from buyers of options, and intra-day monitoring of position limits, the person said.
