Affirmative action for persons, not groups
Supreme Court reserved judgment on whether a state government is empowered to make sub-classification in SC/ST quotas for deprived and weaker castes in these groups in admissions and public jobs. The issue before the top court was whether the Punjab Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes (Reservation in Services) Act 2006 — which provided Balmikis and Mazhabi Sikhs with 'first preference' reservation over 50% of the total seats reserved for SCs — is valid.

Republic Day week saw modest growth for D2C brands: GoKwik
GoKwik, has reported that the direct to consumer (D2C) brands on its network witnessed 12.72% increase in sales during the Republic Day sale week compared to the week prior. The GMV or Gross Merchandise Volume also saw a nominal rise of 10%. The growth in the first quarter of FY 2024 has been muted after a great performance in the last quarter of 2023, despite Republic Day, which is usually a marquee sales event at the start of the year to give the necessary boost to brands. “With shoppers going all out in the long festive season sale period in 2023, followed by the Black Friday sale that has increasingly grown popular amongst Indians, a modest surge in the Republic Day sale period could be a natural resting period in the first month of 2024. Moreover, with macro headwinds such as high-interest rates, layoffs, etc, shoppers might have been more conservative in their spending this time around. However, this seems to be a temporary trend and the consumption is likely to pick up with D2C’s favourite Valentine’s Day sale period coming up,” said Chirag Taneja, Co-Founder and CEO, GoKwik.

Capex on developing oilfields to drop below $3.5 billion in 2030
India's annual capital spending on developing oilfields will fall from next year, shrinking by about a fifth by 2030 in the absence of major discoveries, which will lead to a drop in domestic oil production and expand dependence on imports, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Capital expenditure on developing oil projects is estimated to drop below $3.5 billion in 2030 from around $4.3 billion in 2024. The estimates are based on the current pipeline of upstream projects, said Toril Bosoni, the head of oil markets at IEA. «It's possible that there will be finds, and new project developments will come online, but most of the time, the lag between discovery and production is beyond this time frame,» said Bosoni, referring to the IEA study which factors in capacity till 2030.

It’s time for a broad transition from quantity to quality
India’s 18th Lok Sabha elections will be held in the first quarter of fiscal year 2024-25. One of the major campaign planks that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has adopted is the aspiration of a “viksit" or developed India by 2047. A developed country is widely understood as one that is industrialized, has a high Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, scores well on human development indicators and has institutions of quality.
