Flagging FDI: India must find ways to attract more of it before it's too late
Many shall be restored that now are fallen and many shall fall that now are in honour— Horace After having fallen during covid, the Indian economy now finds itself among the most honoured globally. Most high-frequency indicators are firing vigorously and recent headline GDP numbers have been buoyant beyond expectations. A fiscally restrained budget in an election year and sensible policy interventions have ensured that confidence in the economy and the government’s ability to manage it is high, and the stock market is undergoing one of its periodic bouts of exuberance.

Calcutta HC transfers Sandeshkhali case to CBI; Bengal government moves SC
Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered transfer of investigation into an attack on ED officials at Sandeshkhali on January 5 from the West Bengal government to CBI. It directed that documents and custody of suspended Trinamool leader Shahjahan Sheikh should be immediately handed over to CBI. Sheikh is at present in CID's custody after he was arrested by the West Bengal Police on February 29. HC, in its order, observed that Sheikh is «an elected representative of the public, holding the highest office in a Zilla Parishad, he was fielded as the candidate at the elections held for the said post by the political party which is ruling dispensation. Thus, it has become imperative and absolutely necessary for doing complete justice and enforcing the fundamental rights of the public...» «It is beyond one's comprehension that without a pre-planned effort more than thousand people or three thousand people...could have assembled in that area armed with deadly weapons to attack ED officials and CRPF… We agree with the submissions made on behalf of the appellant ED that except for one offence all were bailable offences and the state police have underplayed the entire situation,» it said.

GST landscape alarmed: Profiteering concerns pose key challenges for India Inc
anti-profiteering mechanism set up under the GST regime was an initial nudge aimed to ensure that companies passed on the 'benefit' — be it a fall in tax rates, or an enhanced input tax credit — arising from the GST roll-out to the end consumer by way of commensurate reduction in prices. The adjudicating authority, National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA) set up in 2017, had a two-year tenure. But this was extended twice, till November 2022, with the mantle passed on to CCI subsequently. This extension contrasts with international precedents, such as Australia's approach, where similar provisions were enforced, following the introduction of GST, although with a sunset clause. In late January, Delhi High Court, responding to many writ petitions filed by India Inc across sectors from FMCG to real estate, upheld the constitutional validity of the anti-profiteering provisions. It noted that the objective of Section 171 of Central GST Act, which mandates the passing on of GST benefits, is grounded in consumer welfare and equity principles.

Warming deal street hints a funding spring is near
MUMBAI : When office commute platform MoveInSync decided to raise $15 million in January, it received term sheets from prospective investors within a week of launching the deal. Though such rapid response is still rare, many investors said deal activity has begun to pick up pace, signalling the approaching end to an agonizing funding winter. While funding in the very early stages continued in the past two years, growth-stage funding had slowed to a crawl.

Not in a hurry to add new categories; will focus on grocery: BigBasket CEO Hari Menon
BigBasket said it is not in a rush to broaden its product portfolio and will continue to focus primarily on grocery even as quick commerce rivals such as Zomato-owned Blinkit and Mumbai-based Zepto are rapidly diversifying into newer categories. “We evaluate new categories carefully and are very careful about entering segments beyond grocery… For now, we’ll remain a grocer and depending on the need we will keep adding categories as we go along,” Hari Menon, cofounder and CEO of BigBasket, told ET in an interaction on Tuesday.

Strong alliances do not enhance India's global standing, loose associations favourable, says Jaishankar in S. Korea
Jaishankar on Tuesday said strong alliances do not enhance a country's global standing while, on the contrary, India had a favourable result from loose or issue-based alliances. «Today, we see India in many ways as playing a useful role as a kind of bridging country which can contribute and address problems. And I think unfortunately the state of the world requires such services,» the minister said in response to a question following his address to the Korea National Diplomatic Academy here. Jaishankar's address was a part of the first leg of his four-day visit to South Korea and Japan. «I don't agree that strong alliances enhance global standing and lose alliances detract. At the beginning of our presidency of the G20, people were worried whether we would be able to get an agreement at the end of it and we had two problems — the Ukraine conflict and the issue of development. A lot of Global South had concerns. We have different ties to one group, I think it would have been difficult to get the G20 to come around had it not been such a case,» the minister said.

Hong Kong's new Investment Entrant Scheme sparks global investor interest
Hong Kong has introduced the new Capital Investment Entrant Scheme which opened for applicants on March 1. To qualify, an applicant needs to invest at least HK$30 million in permissible assets. Successful applicants can bring dependents (including spouse and unmarried children under 18) to Hong Kong and typically receive permission to stay for two years. After this initial period, they can apply for a three-year extension and subsequently request further extensions. After residing continuously in Hong Kong for at least seven years, they can apply for permanent residency as per Hong Kong law. Following the announcement of the revised «Capital Investment Entrant Scheme» by Financial Secretary Paul Chan in the government's «Budget» in February 2023, Hong Kong Immigration Limited has fielded over 1,600 inquiries regarding the scheme by December's end. This indicates significant public interest in the Capital Investment Entrant Scheme (CIES).

The impact of technology artefacts on politics must be studied
Technological innovations are not merely about efficiency or progress but are deeply intertwined with the dynamics of power and control. Few discussions are as thought-provoking as those on the politics embedded within technological artefacts. An intricate dance is observable between tech advancements and their socio-political ramifications.
