Maduro says 324 Venezuelans sent by US to El Salvador prison
US President Donald Trump invoked rarely used US wartime legislation to fly the Venezuelans to El Salvador on March 16, without the migrants being afforded any kind of court hearing. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said 238 Venezuelans were sent to his country after the United States accused them of being part of the Tren de Aragua criminal gang. It is an «embarrassment that has been committed with the kidnapping and forced disappearance of 324 Venezuelan migrants who were taken to a Nazi concentration camp in El Salvador,» Maduro said at a meeting in Caracas with foreign ministers from the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) bloc. Maduro did not explain where he got the figure from, and acknowledged that he does not yet have an official list.

A triple fiscal crisis is jeopardizing climate action

A recent report by the Independent Expert Group on Debt, Nature, and Climate reveals that many of the world’s 144 developing economies are on an unsustainable fiscal trajectory. On average, these countries spend 41.5% of their budget revenues—or 8.4% of GDP—on debt service, severely limiting their scope for public investments in education, health care, infrastructure, and innovation, which are essential for economic growth.

After COP29 impasse, all eyes on Rio G20 meet
BAKU: As ministers take over at the climate talks in the Azerbaijani capital, all eyes are on Rio, where the leaders of the G20 are meeting. The first week of the UN climate summit closed with the scheduled assembly late on Saturday night that lasted a little over three hours, ending at around half hour past midnight. The divergences among countries on important issues, such as finance and the path forward on the outcomes of last year's global stock take, and the absence of trust became apparent as countries took the floor to air their views. On some issues such as loss and damage and adaptation, and mitigation work programme the absence of trust and compromise among countries was such that «Rule 16» was invoked. Rule 16 refers to a provision which is used when countries can't even agree to produce an outcome that puts on record the discussions and divergent views. As a result, countries will have to begin their discussions all over again when they meet in Bonn in the summer. The lack of trust most evident on the issue of how countries propose to address and implement the decisions on emission reduction and energy transition agreed to in Dubai and the lack of any real progress on making available climate finance to developing countries.

De-dollarization debate: Multilateralism can solve the world’s financial needs
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Although the US dollar remains the world’s dominant currency, many countries are diversifying their currency reserves to reduce over-reliance on it, mitigate risks associated with changes in US monetary policy and lessen the impact of global economic shocks. Reduced reliance on the dollar in financial transactions is clear in the decline of dollar-denominated deposits and loans, and the dollar’s share in global foreign exchange reserves.

For F1 teams, the Mexican GP is all about altitude
Formula One (F1) cars racing in Mexico City, the normal rules don’t apply. When speeding down a straight that is almost 1 mile (1.6 km) long, teams would usually need to race a car with as sleek a body shape as possible to cut through the air and hit top speeds quickly. But at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, where this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix (GP) will be held, it’s the opposite. Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez first held a F1 world championship race in 1963. For the drivers, the track will feel more akin to racing on a slippery street course like the one in Monaco, where regular automobiles that use the streets when F1 is not in town wear away the traction provided by the sticky tire rubber laid down by race cars.

Soccer: Messi never ceases to amaze, Argentina boss Scaloni says
Scaloni has been witness to many of Lionel Messi's magical moments over the course of his career but the Argentina manager said on Tuesday that even at the age of 37 his captain continues to amaze him. Messi, who was making just his second international appearance since recovering from an injury sustained at the Copa America in July, scored his 10th international hat-trick as Argentina beat Bolivia 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier. The record eight-times Ballon d'Or winner said after the game he would keep playing as long as he can perform the way he wants and Scaloni hoped he would be on the pitch for years to come.

Meet the nations that have never won an Olympic medal (and two that just did)
countries are winning most of the Olympic medals every two years, that's because it's largely true. Even though more than 150 countries and territories have claimed a medal since the modern Games began in 1896, the list of winners is top-heavy. Entering the Paris Summer Games, the United States has the most, by far, with 2,975 medals, according to the International Olympic Committee's research wing. A group of usual suspects follow: the former Soviet Union (1,204), Germany (1,058), Great Britain (955), France (898). Nearly 70 countries and territories, though — roughly a third of the parade of nations — cannot boast an Olympic medalist in any discipline, summer or winter. Some, like South Sudan, which sent its first team to the Olympics in 2016, have only just begun trying. Others, like Monaco, have been at it for more than a century.
