These were Canada’s top 10 stolen vehicles in 2023
As car theft finally decelerates in Canada after a surge in recent years, the country’s top 10 stolen vehicles for 2023 have been revealed – and they’re mostly SUVs.The Toyota Highlander topped the list, with 3,413 thefts reported, according to the non-profit Équité Association. The Highlanders most commonly stolen were 2021 models.“The Toyota Highlander is a popular model in Canada, which is globally serviceable and has a high resale value both domestically and internationally,” Équité said in news release Tuesday.“It also shares similarities with nearly all of the vehicles on the national list, where the vehicles are 2019 or newer models, and have vulnerabilities that come with keyless ignitions, particularly as these vehicles do not come equipped with anti-theft devices aligned to the ULC 338 Anti-theft Standards.”The Dodge Ram 1500 Series truck came in second place with 3,078 thefts across the country last year, followed by the Lexus RX Series, which was stolen 3,037 times. The Honda CR-V, which was ranked Canada’s top stolen vehicle for two consecutive years, was bumped down to the fourth spot with 2,988 thefts.

Canada increases eligible working hours for international students
Canada has introduced new regulations to safeguard its International Student Program (ISP), enhancing its sustainability and protecting students from abuse. The changes, confirmed by Immigration Minister Marc Miller, aim to ensure that international students have a secure and supportive academic experience while working within Canada's framework. These steps are part of Canada's broader goal to balance the country's immigration levels with long-term economic needs, as outlined in the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan. A key update involves the adjustment of work hours for international students. As of now, eligible students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during their study periods.

Trudeau says he could have acted faster on immigration changes, blames ‘bad actors’
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government could have acted faster on reining in immigration programs, after blaming “bad actors” for gaming the system.Trudeau released a nearly seven-minute video on YouTube Sunday talking about the recent reduction in permanent residents being admitted to Canada and changes to the temporary foreign worker program.Over the next two years, the permanent residency stream is being reduced by about 20 per cent to 365,000 in 2027.In the video, Trudeau talks about the need to increase immigration after pandemic lockdowns ended in order to boost the labour market, saying the move helped avoid a full-blown recession. But after that, Trudeau says some “bad actors” took advantage of these programs, such as employers trying to avoid hiring Canadians, schools recruiting more international students for the higher tuition money, or scams promising bogus paths to citizenship.Trudeau says that he and his team could have acted quicker once it became apparent businesses didn’t need the added labour help anymore.Trudeau says the goal of the government’s immigration reduction is to help stabilize population growth while housing stocks catch up, and then to consider gradually increasing immigration rates once again.

Canada Post, union gear up for renewed bargaining with special mediator
Canada Post and the union representing striking postal workers will head back to the bargaining table on Monday, this time with a special mediator appointed by the federal government.Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) took to the picket lines Friday in a nationwide strike that has halted all mail and parcel service by the Crown corporation.Jan Simpson, president of CUPW, told Global News’s Amandalina Letterio on Sunday that talks between the union and employer are set to resume on Monday.Peter Simpson, a special mediator appointed by the federal government on Thursday, will guide the renewed negotiations.Jan Simpson said the union “looks forward to working with the new mediator,” adding that “the best collective agreements are those negotiated at the bargaining table.”A spokesperson for Canada Post told Global News on Sunday that the Crown corporation also supports the appointment of a special mediator, but added that “the parties remain far apart at the table.”“We remain committed to reaching new agreements at the bargaining table, and not through arbitration and discussions continue,” the spokesperson said.Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon said on Friday he “is not looking at any other solution other than negotiation” to end the Canada Post strike, which business groups have charged will have damaging consequences for the Canadian economy and small businesses.MacKinnon intervened this past week in port shutdowns across British Columbia and Quebec, ordering binding arbitration to get goods flowing again through maritime channels.Postal workers are seeking improvements in wages, benefits and health and safety conditions after years of stagnant pay through the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery.Canada Post
