More earnings cut could be in the offing, warns Sunil Tirumalai of UBS
With Q2 earnings season already turning out to be the worst since March 2020, Sunil Tirumalai, Chief GEM Equity Strategist at UBS, says chances of further earnings cuts are higher than earnings increases. «In the context of slowing signs in the economy (with nominal GDP growth currently in the bottom quartile of 15 year history), renewed fears of slowdown in global trade after changes in US political landscape, and a gradual slowdown in bank credit growth – it is hard to envisage a situation of sharp earnings increase for the stocks,» he says. Edited excerpts from a chat ahead of UBS India Summit:

Japan unveils $65 billion plan to aid domestic chip industry
Shigeru Ishiba on Monday unveiled a $65 billion plan to boost the country's chip and artificial intelligence industries via subsidies and other financial incentives. The plan, which will provide support worth 10 trillion yen ($65 billion) or more by fiscal 2030, comes as countries look to strengthen control over their chip supply chains after global shocks including trade tensions between the United States and China. Japan's government intends to submit the plan, including bills to support the mass production of next-generation chips, to the next parliament session, according to a draft of the plan seen by Reuters earlier on Monday.

EU sees 'slim' chance of success in EV tariff negotiations with China
European Union sees very limited progress in negotiations with China aimed at finding an alternative to tariffs on electric vehicles and the bloc currently sees little prospect of a quick deal, according to people familiar with the matter. China and the EU will continue technical talks this week after discussions in Beijing where both sides touted some progress. However, the chances of a deal remain slim for now, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity. China hasn't yet moved toward the EU's strict requirements on ensuring that any arrangement is enforceable and matches the effect of the anti-subsidy tariffs the bloc adopted last month, they said.

In South America, Trump already losing a trade battle with China
White House will find itself already on the losing side in a trade battle with China, part of a bigger power realignment around the resource-rich region in Washington's backyard. Peru, the world's no. 2 copper exporter, is set to host Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders this week, with China's President Xi Jinping expected to attend and inaugurate a major new Chinese-built port in the country. Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden is also on the guest list. Peru reflects a wider challenge for the White House around South America, where China's presence has grown rapidly given its huge appetite for the region's main exports: corn, copper, soy, beef and battery-metal lithium.

UK universities face funding 'crunch' as foreign students go elsewhere
UK universities are among the most prestigious in the world, but visa restrictions mean they are now attracting fewer international students — taking a heavy toll on their finances. The restrictions are compounding problems caused by the UK's departure from the European Union four years' ago. Almost 760,000 foreign students were enrolled in British universities in 2022, making Britain the second most popular destination after the US, in a highly competitive market.
