Is there a 'China angle' behind Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s $5.5 million salary cut?
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s compensation surged by 63% in fiscal year 2024, reaching around $79.1 million (approximately Rs 665 crore), largely due to a substantial increase in stock awards, TOI reported, citing Microsoft’s recent U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. Stock awards rose from $39 million last year to $71 million, significantly boosting his overall earnings. However, the filing also revealed that Nadella requested a reduction in his cash compensation, citing cybersecurity concerns and hinting at a possible “China angle” in the decision.

Chinese researchers develop AI model for military use on back of Meta's Llama
Meta's publicly available Llama model to develop an AI tool for potential military applications, according to academic papers and analysts. In a June paper reviewed by Reuters, six Chinese researchers from three institutions, including two under the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) leading research body, the Academy of Military Science (AMS), detailed how they had used an early version of Meta's Llama as a base for what it calls «ChatBIT». The researchers used the Llama 2 13B large language model (LLM) that Meta released in February 2023, incorporating their own parameters to construct a military-focused AI tool to gather and process intelligence, and offer accurate and reliable information for operational decision-making.

Apple offers modest growth outlook after iPhone sales help beat profit expectations
Apple's AI-enhanced iPhone made a strong start, pushing quarterly sales ahead of Wall Street expectations, but a modest revenue forecast raised questions about whether that momentum will hold over the holiday sales season. A decline in China sales during the fourth quarter also concerned some analysts and investors, helping send shares down 1.4% in after-hours trade, despite surprisingly large overall profit and revenue in that period. Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri told analysts during a conference call that Apple expects overall revenue to «grow low to mid single digits» during its fiscal first quarter, which ends in December. Analysts had expected revenue growth of 6.65% to $127.53 billion during the quarter, according to LSEG data.

USA sanctions on 10 Indian firms for allegedly aiding Russian military efforts; Sullivan speaks with Doval
Russian military. The announcement was made by US Treasury and State Departments in what they described as «third-country enablers”. However, there is no independent verification if these Indian firms were part of efforts to boost Russian military apparatus. “…The U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned 275 individuals and entities involved in supplying Russia with advanced technology and equipment that it desperately needs to support its war machine. Today’s action targets both individual actors and sprawling sanctions evasion networks across 17 jurisdictions, including India, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Switzerland, Thailand, and Türkiye,” according to the announcement.

Samsung reports major progress in supply deal for AI chips
Samsung Electronics on Thursday reported progress on a major supply deal for artificial intelligence-focused chips, aiming to reassure investors following a slowdown in semiconductor profits during the last quarter. The South Korean technology giant said its operating profit for the July-September period increased by more than 277 per cent from a year earlier to 9.18 trillion won (USD 6.65 billion). But the figure represented a 12 per cent decline from the second quarter, which Samsung attributed largely to one-off costs, such as provision of employee incentives in its computer chip business, and the effects of a weaker US dollar.

Singh virtually dedicated to the nation ‘Desh ka Vallabh’ statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing ‘Museum of Valour’ at Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. Raksha Mantri carried out the inauguration from 4 Corps Headquarters in Tezpur, Assam. He was supposed to visit Tawang, but could not due to bad weather.
