How India can fix the Chinese imports problem
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. India last month extended countervailing duties of 12-30% on certain steel imports from China and Vietnam, following requests from local producers to safeguard against cheaper imports. While this stance against Chinese goods is notable, data indicates that overall imports from China are still on the rise, while exports to the country are faltering.

China hasn’t destroyed the tech sector. It’s sharpened it
China has driven its technology industry off a cliff. The number of startups fell by 50,000 between the peak in 2018 and 2023, with this year on track to be even lower. The market capitalizations of the biggest tech companies, including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd., have shrunk to the tune of hundreds of billions, and pale in comparison to US peers. There is no sign that the sector will ever rebound to what it was before a government crackdown that kicked off in late 2020, even as policymakers have signaled it’s over. Becoming a billionaire entrepreneur has become something to be feared, rather than celebrated. It’s easy for US policymakers to see this with vindication and yet more evidence of a superior tech landscape at home. And from their vantage point, they are correct: President Xi Jinping strangled a generation of entrepreneurs who could have benefited consumers and made investors a lot of money.

Oracle to invest $6.5 billion to set up cloud facilities in Malaysia
Oracle plans to invest more than $6.5 billion to set up its first public cloud region in Malaysia, the company said on Wednesday, the latest major investment by a global tech firm into the Southeast Asian country. Technology giants including Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet unit Google and China's ByteDance have announced billions of dollars worth of digital investments into Malaysia since last year, mostly in cloud services and data centres, powering an infrastructure boom driven by growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI). A cloud region is the physical, geographic location where a company's public cloud facilities are located. Oracle's venture is set to be one of the largest single tech investments so far, outpacing the $6.2 billion planned spending by Amazon's cloud unit AWS announced last year.

India must pivot to a new set of economic & trade policies that values human beings
economic policy framework for the next generation of reforms. That is a sensible move. India has compelling reasons to move away from a textbook framework of open economy macroeconomics. It strives for strategic autonomy in a geopolitically riven world, in which one superpower sits astride the northern border, has built supercharged industrial muscle that can smother Indian industry, and casts a covetous eye on Indian territory. India can find ready support, vis-a-vis China, in the US. However, if the US finds that India is reliant solely on American support, it would have it where China has Pakistan — by the scruff of the neck. India would have to give up all dreams of strategic autonomy.

E-comm deep discounting creating grey mkt, leading to loss to national exchequer: CAIT, AIMRA
e-commerce companies Flipkart and Amazon as they are engaging in predatory pricing and are burning cash to offer heavy discounts on products, traders' body CAIT and mainline mobile retailers' association AIMRA said on Tuesday. These practices, in turn, are creating a grey market of mobile phones, causing losses to the exchequer «as players in the grey market evade taxes», they said. Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), in collaboration with the All India Mobile Retailers' Association (AIMRA), placed the demands in a white paper on the impact of e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart on India's retail ecosystem. AIMRA demanded suspension of operations of Chinese mobile phone companies OnePlus, iQOO, and Poco for allegedly colluding with e-commerce players.

Tensions with China will continue until forward deployments are addressed: EAM S Jaishankar
He made these remarks at an event hosted by Carnegie Endowment in the US. India and China have been engaged in a territorial face-off since 2020 after the Chinese Army transgressed into multiple areas from the Galwan valley to the Finger area along the Pangong lake. Speaking about ties between India and China, he said, «In terms of our own relationship with China, I think it's a long story, but the short version is that we have agreements on how to keep the border peaceful and tranquil, and those agreements were violated by China in 2020. And some of the...because we have forward deployments of our militaries, there are resultant tensions. And until those forward deployments are addressed the tensions would continue. If the tensions continue, it casts a natural shadow over the rest of the relationship. So our relationship hasn't been built for the last four years.»
