COP28: India, China refrain from signing pledge to triple world's renewable energy capacity by 2030
India and China both on Saturday refrained from signing the pledge at the COP28 climate summit to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030 even though New Delhi already committed to it as part of its G20 presidency. During the UN's climate talks here, 118 countries committed to tripling the global renewable energy capacity by 2030 in a highly endorsed initiative. This ambitious goal aims to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in the world's overall energy production.

COP28: Calls for more nuclear and less 'destructive' methane
United States led calls at UN climate talks Saturday for efforts to curb methane emissions but also pushed a deeply controversial drive to boost nuclear energy to curb global warming. With smoggy skies in Dubai highlighting the challenges facing the world, other pledges are expected at the COP28 conference, including stepping up the deployment of renewable energy. The use of nuclear power as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels is highly controversial as environmental groups are concerned about safety and the disposal of nuclear waste. But more than 20 nations ranging from the US to Ghana, Japan and several European countries said in a declaration that it plays a «key role» in the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century. They called for the tripling of nuclear energy capacity by 2050 from 2020 levels. «We are not making the argument to anybody that this is absolutely going to be a sweeping alternative to every other energy source,» US climate envoy John Kerry said at COP28. «But we know because (of) the science and the reality of facts… that you can't get to net zero 2050 without some nuclear,» he said. The other signatories include Britain, France, South Korea, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.

China's respiratory illness rise due to known pathogens: Official
The spike in illness in the country where COVID emerged in late 2019 attracted the spotlight when the World Health Organization sought information last week, citing a report on clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children. Chinese authorities will open more paediatric outpatient clinics, seek to ensure more elderly people and children receive flu vaccines and encourage people to wear masks and wash their hands, Mi Feng, an official with China's National Health Commission, told a press conference. Doctors in China and experts abroad have not expressed alarm about China's outbreaks, given that many other countries saw similar increases in respiratory diseases after easing pandemic measures, which China did at the end of last year.

China's attempts to harness resources from Russian Far-East & Arctic face hurdles & reservations
Construction of one of Russia’s key natural gas projects in Siberia to supply gas to China is likely to be slower than expected, they said, adding that discussions between the two sides over the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline have progressed slowly. The pipeline, if completed, would supply 50 billion cubic metres (1.8 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas per year to China. The new pipeline is needed, according to China’s assessment, because the Power of Siberia 1 pipeline is limited to 67 billion cubic metres per year. However, China is bargaining hard with Russia, which is facing western sanctions.

Cow burps, food waste to take spotlight at COP28 agriculture day
Climate advocacy groups are pressuring world governments gathered at this year's United Nation's COP28 climate conference in Dubai to commit to cutting global food sector emissions, as the conference host promises to put agriculture in the spotlight. Global food systems- including farming and land use, livestock production, household food consumption and waste, and energy used in the farm and food retail sectors — account for 31% of human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). But few governments have ever published numeric targets for lowering those emissions, focusing instead mostly on the use of fossil fuels for power, transport and industry, according to climate advocates. «Business as usual food systems would use nearly the whole carbon budget for a 2-degree Celsius world. We need to implement food systems approaches throughout COP28,» said Joao Campari, global leader of food practice at the World Wildlife Fund. A full day of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP), Dec.

India's construction sector levels up as housing demand spurs economy
GDP data, heightening expectations that the industry will continue to power the economy for years to come. The construction sector grew 13.3% in July-September from a year earlier, up from 7.9% in the previous quarter and its best performance in five quarters, the data released on Thursday showed. That helped India expand at a forecast-beating 7.6%, making it one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. In contrast, Western economies have been squeezed by high interest rates and energy prices, while China has been hobbled by a debt crisis in its property sector. The long-awaited boom — which has created millions of jobs — comes after about six years of debt and pandemic-induced downturn before the construction sector began improving last year and hitting its stride this year.

Chinese community groups in Quebec seek $2.5M from RCMP over ‘police stations’ investigation
RCMP after being accused of hosting secret Chinese government police stations. The announcement of legal action comes amid a months-long police investigation into allegations about the centres. They sent a joint formal notice to the RCMP and Canada’s attorney general Friday.“The lack of any intelligible explanation from the RCMP about the allegations, nor any timeline, leaves the community centres with no choice except to exercise legal recourse,” the organizations said in a statement. In March, the RCMP said the Service à la Famille Chinoise du grande Montréal and the Centre Sino-Québec de la Rive-Sud, located on the city’s south shore, hosted Chinese government agents who allegedly harassed members of the city’s Chinese community. In May, then Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino told a parliamentary committee that the RCMP had shut down the so-called “police stations” in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

Bulls set new records on one-way Dalal Street
equity gauges Friday towered above shrinking benchmarks in export-focused Asian economies to leap to a record, with higher-than-expected economic growth, softer energy prices and subdued US bond yields drawing both overseas and local funds to domestic risk assets. Traders have factored in victories for the BJP in the latest round of state polls and their results, to be announced Sunday, may have a bearing on the short-term directional trend for stocks, although most analysts believe the indices will climb through December. The Nifty gained 134.75 points, or 0.67%, to close at 20,267.90, after an intraday high of 20,291.55. The Sensex climbed 492.75 points, or 0.74%, to close at 67481.19.
