India allows foreign cargo flights from Intl airports for 3 yrs
India will allow foreign airlines to operate non-scheduled cargo flights from all international airports in the country for three years, lifting 2020 curbs that had restricted them to six — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai. This followed lobbying by exporters against the restrictions. While India had an open sky policy in air cargo that allowed unhindered movement by foreign airlines, the government amended it in 2020 to give Indian carriers a boost. However, exporters have been protesting that goods capacity had shrunk as Indian carriers failed to deploy enough aircraft to meet demand.

Govt not considering cut in import duty on rubber: Official
import duty on rubber as of now as the differential between the local and international prices is maintained, a senior official said on Monday. «We have a differential already maintained for the imports that we are getting vis-a-vis the local production. »If you see the local price vis-a-vis international price...so there has been a differential maintained on account of that import duty… So I do not think there is any rethink on reducing import duties as of now," Additional Secretary in the commerce ministry Amardeep Singh Bhatia told reporters here. He was replying to a question about the domestic user industry's demand to cut the duties and that of local producers against any duty reduction. Airlines told to speed up baggage delivery
civil aviation security regulator has asked airlines to deploy adequate manpower within 10 days to ensure passengers don't have to wait more than half an hour to collect their luggage. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) wrote to airlines on Friday, directing them that the first bag should arrive at the carousel within 10 minutes of the aircraft shutting down the engine and the last bag no later than 30 minutes. In January, BCAS monitored baggage arrival time of all airlines at six metro airports — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai — on a weekly basis and found they did not adhere to the standards set in the Operation, Management and Delivery Agreement. Contractual agreement was signed by Airports Authority of India with Delhi and Mumbai airports during their privatisation in 2006. It defines standards of service that the airports have to provide to passengers. «The above monitoring is currently being done at six major airports, However, BCAS has directed the airlines to ensure that the mandated levels are achieved in all airports where they fly,» the regulator said in a statement.

Rare 'triple-dip' La Nina behind unusual air quality trend in India in 2022-23, says study
climate change, triggered a peculiar trend in the 2022-23 winter season where air quality improved in north India while peninsular India recorded an increase in pollution levels, according to a new study released on Sunday. The three consecutive years of La Nina conditions (2020-23) — a rare «triple-dip» phenomenon — had widespread impacts on the ocean and climate across the globe. The study by a team of scientists led by Gufran Beig, Chair Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies, emphasised that besides local emissions, rapidly changing climate is a significant factor affecting air quality. Published in the Elsevier Journal, the study reveals that the air quality worsened in peninsular Indian cities in the 2022-23 winter season but improved in the northern part of India, contrary to the trends seen in recent decades.

Friction between judiciary, executive good for checks and balances: Ex-SC judge S K Kaul
Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul on Saturday said a little bit of underlying friction between the judiciary and the executive is good to maintain checks and balances in a democracy. Addressing a function to confer the Sansad Ratna Awards on parliamentarians, Justice Kaul said the checks and balances of a democracy were enunciated in the Constitution which provides for an administration, a legislature and the court. «Since we have a democracy based on the first past the post concept where most governments would be having less than 50 per cent of the votes, the court plays an important role in maintaining a check and balance on the system,» he said. Justice Kaul, quoting a former chief justice, said «a little bit of underlying tension is good. If things are very hunky-dory between the judiciary and the executive, then we have a problem».
