Manipal Hospitals said on Wednesday it has acquired an 84% stake in AMRI Hospitals in its bid to expand its presence in eastern India. Kolkata-based AMRI Hospitals is owned by FMCG-to-realty conglomerate Emami Group and comprises of over 1,200 beds, over 800 doctors and 5,000-plus healthcare professionals. «In an endeavour to focus on our core businesses, we have divested our majority stake in AMRI Hospitals,» Aditya Agarwal and Manish Goenka, directors, Emami Group, said in a statement. Emami will continue to hold a 15% stake in AMRI with the government of West Bengal holding a 1% stake in the firm. Hospitals in India have been buying each other at near record rates, with M&As totalling $4 billion in 2022 and $2.2 billion in the first five months of this year, Reuters reported in June. Reliance Jio on Tuesday launched its fixed wireless access (FWA) device — Jio AirFiber — in eight cities — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune, just over a month after rival Bharti Airtel introduced its own device in two cities, as both telcos make initial attempts at monetising their 5G services. «Our extensive fiber-to-the-home service JioFiber, already serves over 10 million customers...With JioAirFiber, we are expanding our addressable market to rapidly cover every home in our country with similar quality of service,» Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, said in a statement. A fixed wireless device uses radio frequencies instead of cables/fibres to provide fixed broadband access, using technologies like 5G. Simply put, these are portable broadband devices, much like dongles but with better coverage and speeds. The Jio AirFiber service has been launched with multiple plans ranging from 30 Mbps speeds to 1000 Mbps speeds, all available in blocks of six months and 12 months, the telco said in the statement. The plans are available in two buckets — Jio AirFiber and Jio AirFiber Max.

Kolkata Port, now known as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, has offered a 25 per cent waiver on reefer container electricity charges for perishable exports at Kolkata Dock System to attract exporters of eastern and northeastern region who use other ports to ship their cargo, an official said on Sunday. The discount on power for reefers, short for refrigerated containers, will help Kolkata Port to boost exports of perishables considerably from here, the official said. These refrigerated containers play a pivotal role in maintaining the freshness and quality of perishable goods during transportation. «We have the largest infrastructure for reefer container park in the eastern coast and our aim is to take capacity utilisation to 70 per cent in the near term from below 50 per cent now.

CBI has arrested the Executive Secretary to the CMD of the PSU Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd and six others in connection with alleged bribery of Rs 20 lakh to favour a Gujarat-based company to get the tender for Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Odisha, officials said Sunday. Chairman and Managing Director's Executive Secretary Asish Razdan, Proprietor of a Rajkot-based private company Hetal Kumar Pravinchandra Rajyaguru, and five private persons — Shashank Kumar Jain, Somesh Chandra, Veer Thakkar, Rajiv Ranjan, and Tarang Agarwal- are the six people arrested in the matter, they said. «It was alleged that a conspiracy was laid amongst the said accused for getting the tender of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Odisha, awarded to the private company (HP Rajyaguru) in lieu of illegal gratification to an unknown public servant of Bridge and Roof Company(India) Ltd, Kolkata,» the CBI Spokesperson said. The CBI has alleged that Jain was demanding a bribe on behalf of unidentified officers of Bridge & Roof Company (India) Ltd, Kolkata, from Rajyaguru directly, as well as through another private person for the awarding of the tender to the private company. Rajyaguru had allegedly assured Jain he would send him Rs 20 lakh (approx), through hawala channels, meant for an unidentified public servant of Bridge & Roof Company(India) Ltd. The agency laid a trap when the transaction was to take place in Kolkata and arrested two private persons in connection with the case and recovered the bribe amount of Rs 19.96 Lakh. «During the investigation, it was found that the said bribe was allegedly meant for the Executive Secretary to CMD, Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd (a Public Servant).
