Russia is planning to launch a lunar mission this week after multiple delays, triggering a race with India's Chandrayaan-3 to reach the Moon's south pole. Russia hopes to return to the Moon for the first time in nearly fifty years. The launch, which is scheduled for the early hours of Friday (August 11), is Russia's first since 1976. A Soyuz rocket had been assembled at the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Russian Far East for the launch of the Luna-25 lander. The four-legged lander, which weighs around 800 kilogrammes, is expected to touch down in the region of the lunar south pole. The launch from the Vostochny cosmodrome, 3,450 miles (5,550 km) east of Moscow, will take place four weeks after India sent up its Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander which is set to touch down at the pole on August 23. The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, has outlined an ambitious timeline for its Luna-25 spacecraft. The craft is slated to embark on a five-day journey to the Moon, followed by 5-7 days in lunar orbit, culminating in a descent to one of three potential landing sites near the Moon's south pole. This carefully calculated timetable suggests that Russia could potentially match or narrowly surpass Chandrayaan-3's lunar touchdown. Navigating the challenging terrain of the moon's south pole poses a formidable challenge. However, this region holds immense scientific interest due to its speculated abundance of ice—a resource with vast implications. This ice could potentially serve as a reservoir for fuel, oxygen, and drinking water, thereby bolstering future lunar habitation endeavours.

Russia said Saturday it scrambled an Su-30 fighter jet to «prevent a violation of the Russian state border» by a US Reaper MQ-9 military drone over the Black Sea. «As the Russian fighter approached, the foreign reconnaissance drone performed a U-turn away from the border,» the Russian defence ministry said. The ministry said the drone belonged to the US Air Force. «The Russian aircraft returned safely to its airbase, there was no violation of the border,» it added. Incidents involving Russian and Western aircraft have multiplied over the Black Sea and Baltic Sea in recent months, as Moscow pursues its offensive in Ukraine.

Ukraine carried out a drone strike overnight on a Russian tanker in the Kerch Strait, a day after one of Moscow's ships was hit in the Black Sea, a Ukrainian security source told AFP on Saturday. It was the latest attack around the Black Sea since Moscow exited a deal last month that had protected Ukrainian grain exports despite the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Prominent Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison on Friday. The move came amid a historic crackdown on dissenting voices as Moscow's assault on Ukraine stretches into its second year. The trial was held behind closed doors at the IK-6 penal colony - a maximum-security prison some 250 kilometers east of Moscow where Navalny is jailed.

Alexei Navalny on charges of extremism and sentenced him to 19 years in prison Friday. Navalny is already serving a nine-year term on a variety of charges that he says were politically motivated. The new charges related to the activities of Navalny's anti-corruption foundation and statements by his top associates. It was his fifth criminal conviction and the third and longest prison term handed to him, all of which his supporters see as a deliberate Kremlin strategy to silence its most ardent opponent. It wasn't immediately clear whether he would serve this new term concurrently with his current sentence on charges of fraud and contempt of court. The prosecution had demanded a 20-year prison sentence, and the politician himself said beforehand that he expected to receive a lengthy term. Navalny was also sentenced in 2021 to two and a half years in prison for a parole violation. The extremism trial took place behind closed doors in the penal colony east of Moscow where he is imprisoned. Navalny appeared in the courtroom Friday afternoon, wearing prison garb and looking gaunt, but with a defiant smile on his face. As the judge read out the verdict, the politician stood alongside his lawyers and his co-defendant with his arms crossed, listening with a serious expression on his face.
