US tries to downplay differences with India; seeks engagement to address Ukraine-Hamas conflicts
India over an alleged plot to kill Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and expressed its willingness to engage with New Delhi in resolving the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. “I would say that we would welcome India’s constructive engagement in these two matters (wars in Ukraine and Gaza) as we welcome constructive engagement from countries around the world,” US state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said. He said the Joe Biden administration has focused a “great deal of time and attention” on the ties with India. Miller’s comments came ahead of foreign minister S Jaishankar’s Moscow trip later this week. India, which has maintained neutrality in the Ukraine war and continued its engagements with Russia, favours dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward to end the conflict. India has strong ties with Israel as well as with the Arab world. The country recently hosted the Sultan of Oman.

Lok Sabha discusses bills seeking to replace existing criminal laws
New Delhi: The Lok Sabha discussed on Tuesday three bills — Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill — seeking to repeal and replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, respectively. The bills were introduced by Union home minister Amit Shah in the monsoon session and were referred to a parliamentary standing committee. The initial bills were withdrawn and were reintroduced during this session, incorporating certain suggestions made by the committee.

NITI Aayog bats for structural reforms of MDBs
credit rating agencies and reforming the structure of the multilateral development banks (MDBs) to mobilise funds for green and sustainable growth across developing nations. “The way forward involves a new toolkit of policies and a reform of the structure of the MDBs to help them engage in capital mobilisation, better project implementation, joint financing, risk sharing and making sustainable infrastructure an asset class,” the Aayog said in its report on a Green and Sustainable Growth Agenda. The report, developed by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Ottawa, and the Global Development Network (GDN), New Delhi, has been compiled following a G20 international conference on the theme in July this year.

TV ads see new trends even as volumes drop 4% in Q2
NEW DELHI : Advertising volumes on television decreased 4% in the September quarter from a year earlier, suggesting a slight slowdown even as a few new trends emerged with the auto, finance and e-commerce sectors gaining ground. The period between July and September saw significant shifts in categories, sectors, advertisers, and growth areas in television advertising, per data shared by TAM Media Research. Advertisers from the food and beverage sector maintained top position with 21% of the ad volumes, unchanged from a year earlier, while the personal care and hygiene category gained 2 percentage points over the same quarter last year, accounting for 18% of all ad volumes.

IAF, Indian Army join forces as unprecedented rainfall floods Tamil Nadu
