New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday said that its intervetion led to the arrest of 23 accused persons in Rajasthan for allegedly selling girls, mostly minors on stamp papers for physical abuse and sexual assault in various parts of the country and abroad. The NHRC observed that given the registration of cases involving the selling of girls in some communities in the recent past, it appears that the practice is still continuing unabated. It has said that this practice requires to be curbed forthwith in totality and stringent steps be taken by all the stakeholders.

New Delhi: The Congress has decided not to participate in any Lok Sabha exit poll debates on the television channels and said it does not want to indulge in speculation and slugfest for TRP. Congress spokesperson and media department chairperson Pawan Khera said the voters have cast their votes and their verdict has been secured. «The results will be out on 4th June. Prior to that, we do not see any reason to indulge in speculation and slugfest for TRP,» he said in a statement shared on X.

Flight operations at the Srinagar International Airport had to be halted for an hour on Friday after a bomb threat as the authorities took preventive measures, officials said. The Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the Srinagar Airport received a bomb threat on an Air Vistara flight from New Delhi, prompting a response from the authorities, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is responsible for the security at the airport, the officials said. They said a threat call was made to the airport around the noon about the flight, which had 178 passengers onboard. Immediately after the flight landed at the airport, it was directed towards an isolation bay and the passengers and the crew were evacuated, they added. A thorough search of the plane was carried out and bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs were also deployed to check any suspicious items, they said. After an exhaustive search, no explosives were found on the plane, they added.

temperatures across India are having their worst impact in the country's teeming megacities, experts said Thursday, warning that the heat is fast becoming a public health crisis. NEW DELHI:Tata Steel Ltd will invest ₹17,408 crore ($2.11 billion) in its Singapore unit, T Steel Holdings Pte Ltd, to fund the restructuring of its struggling UK business as well as repay the debt of its offshore entities.Tata Steel will also be writing off $565 million of existing debt to T Steel, converting it into equity shares, Asia’s oldest steelmaker said in regulatory disclosures on Wednesday. The investment in T Steel, a holding company for the shares of Tata Steel’s overseas subsidiaries, will be done over the course of 2024-25.Tata Steel reported a 65% year-on-year decline in its consolidated profit, to ₹554 crore, for the quarter ended 31 March, missing Street estimates.

NEW DELHI : Ten of India’s 65 cities with over a million population experienced more than 100 hours of ‘heat stress’—dangerous levels of both heat and humidity—in May, in the midst of India’s longest election season, data analysed by climate tech startup, Respirer Living Sciences, showed. Heat stress refers to situations when the heat index, which accounts for both surface temperature and humidity, exceeds 41°C.

rupee logged its biggest daily decline against the U.S. dollar in nearly seven weeks on Wednesday, pressured by persistent dollar demand from importers and election-related risks. The rupee ended at 83.3450, down from 83.1775 in the previous session. It fell 0.2% on Wednesday, its biggest daily fall since April 12.

India is poised to begin wheat imports after a six-year gap, to replenish depleted reserves and hold down prices that leaped following three years of disappointing crops, sources say, as the approaching end of general elections removes a key hurdle. New Delhi is expected to abandon a 40% tax on wheat imports this year, officials and other sources told Reuters, paving the way for private traders and flour millers to buy from producers such as top exporter Russia, albeit in modest volumes. As the new-season wheat harvest rolls in, the government is likely to wait until after June to scrap the import tax, in time for Russia's harvest, the sources said.

India's exports will likely surge to $835 billion by 2030 from $431 billion in 2023 with its large domestic market helping attract firms looking for supply chain alternatives to China, Nomura said in a report on Tuesday. «Firms in electronics, apparel & toys, automobile & components, capital goods and semiconductor manufacturing are looking to invest in India. Given India's large domestic consumer market, firms setting up shop in India are attracted also because of the captive domestic market,» Nomura said, predicting a 10% annual growth over the period.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and State Congress chief D K Shivakumar should consult senior party leaders like him regarding selection of candidates for the MLC polls. As per the existing strength of parties in the assembly, the Congress can win 7 seats, the BJP three and JD(S) one seat. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar today left for New Delhi to discuss candidates with the Congress high command. The schedule for filing nominations for the MLC election has already begun, and it will go on till June 3.
