India on Tuesday once again refused to endorse China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), becoming the only country in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) not to support the project. A declaration issued at the end of an India-hosted virtual summit of the grouping said Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan reaffirmed their support to the BRI.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his speech at the virtual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on July 04 addressed important issues related to long-term sustainable development in the SCO region, for increasing inter-regional trade, the Green Agenda and cooperation in the sphere of tourism among others. Speaking about the vast economic opportunities in the SCO region, he pointed out that SCO accounts for approximately one-third of the global GDP, about 27 percent of foreign direct investments, and up to 20 percent of global trade.

SCO Heads of State Council approved the SCO Economic Development Strategy to 2030; made the decisions on completing the procedure for admitting the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and granting it the status of an SCO member state; signed the Memorandum of Obligations of the Republic of Belarus in order to obtain the status of an SCO member state; and on announced the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan, as the SCO Cultural and Tourism Capital in 2023–2024. In addition, the SCO Heads of State Council approved the Concept of Cooperation between the SCO Member States to decarbonise transport and promote digital transformation and innovative technologies to achieve greater efficiency and sustainability.

Xi Jinping urged Russian, Iranian and other leaders on Tuesday to work towards safeguarding «regional peace» as he addressed a virtual summit of their Shanghai alliance. NEW DELHI : The leaders’ summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) takes places on Tuesday under the chairmanship of India, with a likely push for inducting Iran and possibly Belarus as new members. Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the virtual summit is set to be attended by President Xi Jinping of China, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, President Vladimir Putin of Russia and the leaders of a number of Central Asian countries. The previous summit took place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in September last year.
