Russian regional governor said on Wednesday he had ordered the rebuilding of nine houses in a village that was accidentally bombed by one of Russia's own warplanes. The incident took place on Tuesday, when the state news agency RIA quoted the defence ministry as reporting an «abnormal discharge of aircraft ammunition» over the village of Petropavlovka in the southern region of Voronezh. Governor Alexander Gusev said the nine houses would be rebuilt as soon as possible, and there had also been damage to a small local school, an arts centre and an administrative building. No one had been killed but four people were treated for minor injuries and residents had access to psychological support, he said. Five cars and a tractor had also been damaged, and the owners would get compensation. «Not a single resident will be left without help, we will support everyone as much as possible,» Gusev said. Authorities did not say what caused the incident. While the damage was limited, it was embarrassing for Russia's military and came at a time of high alert in its southern regions close to the border with Ukraine. Over the New Year period, Russia staged some of its heaviest missile and drone strikes on Ukraine since its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Voronezh region, near the two countries' shared border, Russian and Ukrainian officials said Sunday. «Several drones were detected and destroyed overnight by air defence systems above the Voronezh region,» regional governor Alexander Gusev wrote on Telegram. «Their falling debris set off a fire in a depot» in the Podgorensky district, about 80 km from the Ukrainian borderm. «Explosives began to detonate», Gusev said, adding that there were no indications anybody had been hurt. Rescue teams were at the scene and Gusev said local people living near the depot were being evacuated.

The report said, Budanov was the first official to suggest that Wagner fighters came close to acquiring nuclear weapons and further escalating an armed mutiny that has been widely interpreted as the biggest challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin's power.  Wagner fighters drove in the direction of Voronezh-45 after peeling away from a larger convoy of heavy weaponry that was advancing along the M4 highway that runs north from Rostov, where the rebellion began.

Reuters, Ukraine's head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, said that the Wagner fighters went far further. He said that they reached the nuclear base and that their intention was to acquire small Soviet-era nuclear devices in order to "raise the stakes" in their mutiny. "Because if you are prepared to fight until the last man standing, this is one of the facilities that significantly raises the stakes," Budanov said.

About 100 miles from the Ukrainian border, in the regions of Kursk and Voronezh, more than 1,00,000 Russian troops have already amassed ahead of an impending global fear that Russia might invade Ukraine.
