ICC World Cup: Injury-hit New Zealand call up Jamieson as cover for Matt Henry
New Zealand have called Kyle Jamieson into their World Cup squad as cover while fellow pace bowler Matt Henry awaits the results of a scan on a hamstring injury. Jamieson, previously with the squad in India as cover for Tim Southee, will arrive in Bengaluru late on Thursday ahead of Saturday's pool game against Pakistan. New Zealand coach Gary Stead said that with Henry awaiting the results of a scan on his right hamstring and fast bowler Lockie Ferguson recovering from an Achilles injury, the Black Caps had to summon cover. They have two group games remaining and a place in the semi-finals still up for grabs. «The severity of Matt's injury, combined with a short turnaround to Pakistan, meant we couldn't risk being a bowler down for Saturday,» Stead said on Thursday. «Matt's been a world-class performer for us in ODI cricket for the past two World Cup cycles so we've got our fingers crossed for the scan results later today,» he added. Stead was confident it would not take long for the towering 28-year-old Jamieson, who has taken 14 wickets in 13 ODIs, to re-adjust to Indian conditions. «Kyle's on his way over as we speak and we look forward to welcoming him back into the group,» he said. Stead added: «He'll likely train with us on Friday with a mind to being available for Saturday's game.» New Zealand have been beset by injuries with star batsman Kane Williamson (thumb) and all-rounder Mark Chapman (thigh) both currently sidelined. The 2019 World Cup finalists endured a 190-run thrashing by South Africa on Thursday, with Henry breaking down midway through his sixth over. Their third defeat of this World Cup meant New Zealand slipped to fourth in the 10-team table with eight points, two ahead of Pakistan as

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson fractures thumb, but won’t go home
Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the team's immediate World Cup matches with a fractured thumb, but head coach Gary Stead is optimistic the batter will be back in action at some stage of the tournament. After spending nearly seven months on the sidelines with a knee injury, Williamson made 78 not out in his return to action in the team's comprehensive victory against Bangladesh on Friday. The 33-year-old, however, was struck by a throw while running between the wickets during the match, which now makes him uncertain for the tournament. Tom Blundell will travel to India as cover, but Williamson will remain with the team with the hope of being available for the back end of group play next month, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement on Saturday. «Firstly, we're all feeling for Kane to have this occur after all his hard work to return from his knee injury,» Stead said. «While it's disappointing news, the initial diagnosis has given us some optimism he can still feature later in the pool play following a period of rest and rehabilitation. »Kane is clearly a massive part of our side and a world class player and captain — so we'll look to give him every opportunity we can to return in the tournament." Blundell was picked ahead of Henry Nicholls, who suffered a mild side-strain during a Plunket Shield warm-up match the week. «Tom's been with the one-day side on tours to Pakistan and Bangladesh and performed well,» Stead said. «He covers multiple positions in the batting order and his wicket-keeping skills are also an added bonus as a back-up.» The 2019 runners-up have kicked off their campaign for a maiden World Cup title with a hat-trick of victories.

New Zealand name ICC Cricket World Cup squad; Williamson in, Allen out
Kane Williamson will lead New Zealand at next month's one-day World Cup and Trent Boult will spearhead the pace attack but opener Finn Allen and fast bowler Adam Milne have missed out on the squad for India. Boult returned to action with three wickets in a 79-run defeat by England in Southampton on Sunday and was duly named in the 15-man squad to be led by Williamson, despite the batter's ongoing recovery from a long-term knee ligament injury. New Zealand were runners-up to hosts England at the 2019 tournament, losing a classic final at Lord's on boundary count after the teams could not be separated by a tie-breaking Super Over. Will Young beat out Allen for the opening batsman slot which has been contested since Martin Guptill's release last year. «We just felt that we looked through what the potential game-plan was looking like in India, looked at the grounds, and also looked at the form of the two players as well,» head coach Gary Stead told reporters. «We felt that Young was the right guy to go with.» Jimmy Neesham, who all but batted New Zealand to victory in the 2019 final, has also been included, despite joining Boult in opting out of his national contract last year. «I think you always have the need for all-rounders and I guess with Michael Bracewell dropping out, that also opened up an option for another all-rounder there,» Stead said of Neesham's selection. Boult, Williamson, Neesham, fast bowler Tim Southee and wicketkeeper batsman Tom Latham form a strong core of World Cup veterans but the squad also includes six players looking to make their debut at the 50-over tournament. Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips were selected in their first one-day World Cup squad, having featured in
