Swimming in groups, staying relatively close to the shore, and avoiding areas with bait fish are advised by Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research. Statistics reveal that the likelihood of a shark attack remains low. The Florida Museum of Natural History reported only 57 confirmed, unprovoked shark attacks worldwide last year, with 41 of them occurring in the United States. New York experienced eight nonfatal incidents.
