Sikh individual was assaulted and injured while wearing a turban on a bus in New York, according to the police. The incident occurred on a shuttle bus in Queens on Sunday, as reported by CBS News channel.
The attacker approached the Sikh teen, demanded he remove his turban, and made offensive remarks about it being incompatible with the country. Subsequently, the assailant physically assaulted the victim, striking him on the face, back, and the back of his head, resulting in minor cuts.
The attacker even attempted to forcibly remove the victim's turban before leaving the bus. The suspect is described as a male, aged 25-35, with a dark complexion, slim build, approximately 5'9" tall, brown eyes, and black hair.
The New York Police Department's hate crime unit is actively investigating the incident and has categorised it as a «hate crime assault.» As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
Community activist Japneet Singh expressed that the victim is presently dealing with significant trauma, and the family is deeply concerned for his well-being.
Sikh Coalition, a representative organisation for the Sikh community, stated in a communication on X (formerly Twitter) that they are in contact with the survivor and offering the necessary support.
The survivor has requested anonymity for the time being. It is understood that the NYPD is appropriately treating this incident as a hate crime.
