Why France’s gold move may hold a cue for India in a post-Trumpian world
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.Last month, France did something that would have been unimaginable a few years ago; certainly before the outbreak of the Ukraine war, when US-led sanctions cut Russia off from the Swift payment system, the main messaging network that enables secure international financial transactions, and froze more than $300 billion of its assets. Its central bank, the Bank of France, pulled out its remaining gold reserves held in New York. Admittedly, no central bank today relies on gold to back its currency.

New York under Mamdani is going welfarist in a big way but is the mayor playing with fiscal fire?
France is great. I visit a few times a year, and the food is fantastic, the museums are amazing and day care is free (or heavily subsidized) for toddlers aged 3 months or more. New York City, where I live, is also great, with pretty good food and architecture.

Manu Joseph: How ‘The New Yorker,’ a magazine of the elite, managed to survive the age of social media
In a Netflix documentary that celebrates one hundred years of The New Yorker magazine, its staff writer Andrew Marantz says that he has often been in places where people would say “All you elite [expletive], you don’t know the first thing” about America. It is the kind of magazine, he says, that would faithfully quote that expletive, but place an accent on the first ‘e’ of elite, thereby confirming at least one part of the abuse.

Affordability versus public goods: Why politics tends to put everyone on the losing side of this divide
It finally happened. Effective 13 November 2025, President Donald Trump of the United States of America exempted 225 agricultural items, fresh and processed, from tariffs termed ‘reciprocal’ but actually unilaterally country-specific. The new zero-tariff list is product-specific, not differentiated by country.

Mass layoffs by Donald Trump administration are hampering critical health services, including cancer, claims report
Among those ousted were its director, Dr. John Howard, who had been in the job through three previous presidential administrations, AP reported. The layoffs are stalling — and perhaps ending — many programmes, including a firefighter cancer registry and a lab that is key to certifying respirators for many industries, as per the report. The cuts are «a very pointed attack on workers in this country», said Micah Niemeier-Walsh, vice president of the union local representing NIOSH employees in Cincinnati. Unions that represent miners, nurses, flight attendants and other professions have criticized the cuts, saying it will slow the identification and prevention of workplace dangers. Rallies in Cincinnati and other cities drew not only fired CDC employees but also members of unions representing teachers, postal workers and bricklayers, Niemeier-Walsh said.

India dismisses NYT report on HAL re-routing sensitive tech to Russia, calls it 'factually incorrect and misleading'
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday strongly rejected a report published by The New York Times, calling it «factually incorrect and misleading.» Official sources stated that the report misrepresented facts and framed issues to suit a particular political narrative. Responding to allegations concerning Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned defence company, the MEA asserted that HAL has always complied with international rules on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments. «We (Ministry of External Affairs) have seen a report published by The New York Times. The said report is factually incorrect and misleading. It has tried to frame issues and distort facts to suit a political narrative. The Indian entity (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-HAL) mentioned in the report has scrupulously followed all its international obligations on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments,» MEA sources told news agency ANI. The ministry also highlighted India's strong legal and regulatory framework for strategic trade. It reaffirmed that all Indian companies conducting business overseas are guided by these regulations. «India’s robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade continues to guide overseas commercial ventures by its companies. We expect reputed media outlets to undertake basic due diligence while publishing such reports, which obviously was overlooked in the instant case,» sources added.

Protesters target 277 Tesla locations in US over Elon Musk's government role, demand resignation
Tesla dealerships to express their opposition to billionaire Elon Musk's involvement in the US government, Al Jazeera reported. Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has faced criticism for his efforts to cut government spending and access sensitive data. The protests, organised by a group including disgruntled Tesla owners, celebrities, and a Democratic lawmaker, aim to pressure Musk to resign from his government position. Saturday's demonstrations marked the first coordinated effort to target all 277 Tesla locations in the US, as per Al Jazeera. In New York City, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Manhattan Tesla store, demanding Musk's resignation. These demonstrations coincide with a decline in Tesla sales, which the organizers hope to exacerbate further. The protesters were gathered at the call of environmentalists from Planet Over Profit, who believe that «stopping Musk will save lives and protect our democracy.»
